What is the SAFe Agilist certification?
SAFe Agilist, abbreviated SA, is a certification from Scaled Agile, the company behind the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). It is the certification attached to the Leading SAFe course, and Scaled Agile classifies it as foundational level.
The exam content shows who it is for: leaders and practitioners who need to understand how SAFe scales agile beyond a single team — the Lean-Agile mindset and principles, Agile Release Trains, PI Planning, Lean Portfolio Management and leading the change. It is about the operating model of an organisation, not the daily work inside one Scrum team.
Scaled Agile now titles the credential the AI-Empowered SAFe Agilist, and the exam includes topics on using AI in these roles. The next section explains what that change means if you hold, or are about to earn, the earlier SAFe 6 version.

AI-Empowered SAFe Agilist: what replaced SAFe 6
In 2026 Scaled Agile replaced the SAFe 6 version of the SA course and exam with the AI-Empowered SAFe Agilist. Its release FAQs state that the current SA courseware version is 2026.02.24, that the new learning plan and licences became available on 24 February 2026, and that the course was revised to streamline its core lessons and introduce new topics on AI.
The legacy course is being phased out. Scaled Agile states: “Starting May 26th, legacy Leading SAFe classes will no longer be available to schedule or roster learners.” If you book Leading SAFe today, make sure it is the AI-Empowered version.
If you already hold an active SAFe 6 Agilist certification, you do not need to retake the exam: Scaled Agile says current Certified SAFe 6 Agilists can upgrade by completing the Essential AI Skills SAFe Skill, a self-paced e-learning that takes about 45 minutes, at no additional cost while the certification is active.

How much does the SAFe Agilist certification cost?
There are two routes, and they are priced differently. The proctored exam route costs $495 plus tax, is non-refundable, and gives you two exam attempts within a 60-day window. If both fail, Scaled Agile requires a new proctored exam purchase.
The course route runs through a Leading SAFe class. Scaled Agile states that for foundational courses the first two exam attempts are included in the course registration fee when taken within 60 days of course completion, and that retakes cost $50 for most exams. Scaled Agile does not publish the Leading SAFe course price on the certification page.
After that comes the recurring cost. SA is renewed every year; the SAFe Foundational tier, which renews SAFe Agilist, costs $195 per year plus applicable tax.

What is the SAFe Agilist exam format and passing score?
The SA exam has 45 questions in 90 minutes — two minutes per question. Questions are multiple choice, single select. The exam is web-based and closed book, with no outside assistance allowed.
The passing score is 80%. On 45 questions, that means at least 36 correct answers; nine misses is the limit. Scaled Agile publishes the figure directly, so this is a target you can measure your practice against.
If you take the proctored route, the exam requires a scheduled appointment with a live proctor who verifies your identity and monitors the session. Scaled Agile notes on the study guide that details are subject to change at any time, so check the guide again shortly before you book.

What is on the SAFe Agilist exam?
Scaled Agile’s exam study guide for the AI-Empowered SA, dated 27 May 2026, lists six domains with weighting ranges:
One caution: the certification page shows the same six domains but different ranges for three of them — 18–21% for mindset and principles, 7–9% for team and technical agility, and 25–28% for Lean Portfolio Management. We list the study guide’s figures because it is the exam document, and flag the discrepancy rather than hide it. Either way, product development flow and portfolio management together are the bulk of the exam.
- Adapt and Thrive with SAFe — 7–9%
- Build a Foundation with Mindset, Value, and Principles — 21–23%
- Establish Team and Technical Agility — 10–12%
- Product Development Flow — 25–28%
- Explore Lean Portfolio Management (LPM) — 21–23%
- Lead the Change — 7–9%

SAFe Agilist prerequisites
Scaled Agile states “No prerequisites required” for SAFe Agilist, and marks that a training course is not required. The proctored exam route lets you buy the exam directly, without attending Leading SAFe first.
The two routes still differ in what you get. The course route includes the Leading SAFe class and access to the exam through the learning plan after course completion; the proctored route is the exam alone, taken with a live online proctor. Both lead to the same certification.

How long is the SAFe Agilist certification valid?
SAFe certifications renew every year. For SA, the renewal runs through the SAFe Foundational tier at $195 per year plus tax, and Scaled Agile requires you to earn a minimum of 12 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) each year.
If a renewal is missed, Scaled Agile states that there are no late fees or exam retakes required to maintain certifications, so a lapsed SA can be renewed without sitting the exam again. Note one interaction with the AI-Empowered change: the free upgrade path for SAFe 6 Agilists applies to an active certification, and an expired one has to be renewed first.

SAFe Agilist study materials and training
The official preparation is Scaled Agile’s own: the Leading SAFe course, and the Exam Study Guide for the AI-Empowered SA, which lists the domains, the exam rules and the retake policy.
The certification process also includes an unlimited practice test with question-level feedback and a coaching report, which Scaled Agile describes as a simulation and study tool. Use it against the domain weightings: product development flow and Lean Portfolio Management are where the largest share of the 45 questions sits.
Make sure any material you use is written for the AI-Empowered version. SAFe 6 material covers a different domain list and does not include the AI topics the current exam tests.

SAFe Agilist vs Certified ScrumMaster
The two answer different questions. Certified ScrumMaster, from Scrum Alliance, is about the scrum master role on a single team: a required 16-hour course, then a 50-question test where 37 correct answers pass, with renewal every two years. SAFe Agilist, from Scaled Agile, is about running agile across many teams and the portfolio — ARTs, PI Planning, Lean Portfolio Management.
Structurally, SA has no prerequisites and does not require a course, while CSM cannot be taken without its course. SA renews yearly with 12 CEUs and $195; CSM renews every two years with SEUs. If your organisation runs SAFe, SA describes the system you work in; CSM describes one role inside a team.

SAFe Agilist practice questions
Certsqill’s SAFe Agilist practice questions cover the AI-Empowered exam with an explanation for every option, weighted the way Scaled Agile weights the domains — with most of the work where most of the 45 questions are: product development flow and Lean Portfolio Management.

Leading SAFe certification: course and credential
Leading SAFe is the course; SAFe Agilist is the certification it leads to. That is why people search for a “Leading SAFe certification”, a “Leading SAFe Agilist certification” or a “Leading SAFe agile certification” — all three mean the same credential: the SAFe Agilist (SA), which Scaled Agile now issues as the AI-Empowered SAFe Agilist.
A certified SAFe Agilist has passed the SA exam: 45 questions in 90 minutes, 80% to pass. Scaled Agile states “No prerequisites required” and marks that a training course is not required — so the Leading SAFe certification course is one route to the exam, and a proctored exam bought on its own is the other.

How to get SAFe Agilist certification
There are two routes. Through the Leading SAFe course, Scaled Agile includes the first two exam attempts in the course registration fee when taken within 60 days of course completion. Without a course, you buy the proctored exam: $495 plus tax, non-refundable, with two attempts within a 60-day window and a live proctor at a scheduled appointment.
Either way, the steps for how to get SAFe Agilist certification are the same at the core: study the domains in Scaled Agile’s exam study guide, use the unlimited practice test Scaled Agile includes as a simulation and study tool, and pass the 45-question exam at 80%. Make sure everything you study is written for the AI-Empowered version.

SAFe Agilist training: choosing a Leading SAFe course
Scaled Agile names one course for this certification: Leading SAFe. Any SAFe Agilist training you book should be that course in its current version, because the exam follows it. Since February 2026 the current courseware is version 2026.02.24 — the AI-Empowered edition.
Compare a SAFe Agilist course on what is bundled rather than on content alone. SAFe Agilist certification training through Leading SAFe includes the exam attempts in the registration fee; the course price itself is not published on Scaled Agile’s certification page. Check that the class is rostered on the AI-Empowered learning plan and that you can sit the exam within 60 days of finishing.

Leading SAFe 6.0 course: what happened to it
If you are looking for a Leading SAFe 6.0 course or Leading SAFe 6.0 training, note that Scaled Agile has phased it out. Its release FAQs state: “Starting May 26th, legacy Leading SAFe classes will no longer be available to schedule or roster learners.” The current course is the AI-Empowered Leading SAFe, and the certification it leads to is the AI-Empowered SAFe Agilist.
If you already hold an active SAFe 6 Agilist certification, you do not need to retake anything: Scaled Agile says you can upgrade by completing the Essential AI Skills SAFe Skill, about 45 minutes of self-paced e-learning, at no additional cost.

Cost of SAFe Agilist certification, and other Scaled Agile certifications
The cost of SAFe Agilist certification depends on the route: $495 plus tax for the proctored exam with two attempts, or the Leading SAFe course fee with two attempts included. On the course route, Scaled Agile lists retakes at $50 for most exams. After that comes $195 per year plus tax for the SAFe Foundational tier, which renews SA.
The wider Scaled Agile certification cost follows the same pattern for SSM and POPM: a course, or a separately purchased proctored exam, then a yearly renewal. Scaled Agile publishes the proctored exam fee and the renewal tiers, but no course price on the SA certification page, so the scaled agile framework certification cost for any of these roles is either the class fee or the proctored exam, plus renewal.

Scaled Agile SAFe certification paths: Scrum Master and POPM
Scaled Agile certification courses are organised by role. Alongside SAFe Agilist, the catalogue lists SAFe Scrum Master, SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager, Lean Portfolio Management, SAFe Practitioner, SAFe Release Train Engineer, SAFe Advanced Scrum Master, SAFe Architect, SAFe DevOps and others. Each Scaled Agile SAFe certification is tied to its own course and exam.
The Scaled Agile Scrum Master certification is SAFe Scrum Master (SSM), now presented as an AI-Empowered SAFe certification. Scaled Agile lists its exam at 45 questions in 90 minutes with 80% to pass, at foundational level, and states that the training course is not required.
The Scaled Agile Product Owner certification is SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager, usually shortened to POPM. The Scaled Agile POPM certification exam is timed multiple choice, 90 minutes, with 82% to pass — slightly higher than SA — and Scaled Agile again marks the training course as not required. Like SA, it requires at least 12 CEUs each year.

SAFe Agilist certification renewal
SAFe Agilist certification renewal is yearly. Scaled Agile states that renewals are every year, and the SA page requires a minimum of 12 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) each year. The renewal fee runs through the SAFe Foundational tier at $195 per year plus applicable tax.
To renew SAFe Agilist certification after it has lapsed, you do not need to resit the exam: Scaled Agile says there are no late fees or exam retakes required to maintain certifications. The same rule frames Scaled Agile certification renewal for its other credentials, though the tier and CEU count depend on the certification — the SSM page, for example, states 24 CEUs within a two-year cycle.

Leading SAFe certification exam questions and answers
The SA exam is web-based and closed book, with multiple-choice, single-select questions. Scaled Agile’s study guide for the AI-Empowered SA weights product development flow at 25–28% and Lean Portfolio Management and the mindset and principles domain at 21–23% each, so most Leading SAFe certification exam questions and answers you practise should come from those areas.
Scaled Agile includes an unlimited practice test with question-level feedback and a coaching report as part of the certification process — the official place to see real question style. Exam dumps are a different thing: leaked items with answers of unknown accuracy. Anything collected before 2026 was written for the SAFe 6 exam, whose domain list differs from the AI-Empowered one, so even correct answers would test the wrong version.

What is SAFe Agilist certification for?
SAFe Agilist SA certification is aimed at leaders and practitioners who need to understand how SAFe scales agile across many teams and the portfolio — Agile Release Trains, PI Planning, Lean Portfolio Management and leading the change. Scaled Agile classifies it as foundational and lists no prerequisites; role-specific certifications such as SSM and POPM sit alongside it in the same catalogue.
Certsqill’s SAFe Agilist question bank carries expert-developed questions for the AI-Empowered exam with an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per domain, with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
