SAFe RTE certification: exam, course, cost and renewal
The SAFe Release Train Engineer (RTE) certification from Scaled Agile is now delivered as the AI-Empowered SAFe Release Train Engineer course; legacy RTE classes could no longer be scheduled from 8 September 2026. The exam has 60 questions in 120 minutes and you need 82% to pass. The first attempt is included with the course, retakes cost US$50, and renewal runs yearly in the SAFe Advanced tier at US$295. Scaled Agile publishes no course price.

What is the SAFe RTE certification?
The SAFe Release Train Engineer (RTE) certification is Scaled Agile’s credential for the person who facilitates an Agile Release Train — the long-lived team of agile teams that plans and delivers together in SAFe. The RTE runs PI Planning, keeps the train executing, removes impediments across teams and coaches the train towards better flow. Scaled Agile classes the certification as advanced level.
That level shows in who it is for. Scaled Agile recommends being familiar with the SAFe Agilist and SAFe Scrum Master roles before you take the course. In practice the SAFe Release Train Engineer certification is aimed at experienced Scrum Masters, programme managers and agile coaches who already work inside a SAFe implementation and are moving up from a single team to a whole train.

AI-Empowered SAFe Release Train Engineer: what changed in 2026
The course is now called AI-Empowered SAFe Release Train Engineer. Scaled Agile names releases by date, and the newest RTE courseware is 26.6, available since 9 June 2026. Since Tuesday, 8 September 2026, legacy RTE classes can no longer be scheduled and learners can no longer be rostered to them, so any SAFe RTE course you book now is the AI-Empowered version.
The exam changed with it. Scaled Agile states that the exam and practice test were refactored with new questions on the new topics, and the current outline includes a domain on applying AI to the RTE role. The size stayed the same: 60 questions in a 120-minute window.
If you already hold an active SAFe 6 RTE certification, Scaled Agile says the upgrade costs nothing extra; after it, your certification is updated to Certified AI-Empowered SAFe Release Train Engineer, the original SAFe 6 RTE credential stays in your records, and you renew only the AI-Empowered certification going forward. An expired RTE6 certification has to be renewed first.

SAFe RTE course and training
The SAFe RTE course is the route to the exam. Scaled Agile’s exam details state that access to the exam comes through your learning plan after course completion, and that the first attempt is included in the course registration fee when taken within 60 days of finishing the course. Scaled Agile delivers SAFe RTE training through its training partners and lists classes through its “Find a Training Class” search.
Scaled Agile does not publish the length of the SAFe Release Train Engineer course on its certification page, and it does not publish a course price. Both are set by the training partner running the class, so check the class listing for dates, format (online or in person) and what is included.
Whichever SAFe RTE training you choose, check that it is the current AI-Empowered course. Since September 2026 the legacy class can no longer be scheduled, and the exam now tests material that older courseware did not cover.

SAFe RTE certification cost
There is no single SAFe RTE certification cost published by Scaled Agile. The main cost is the course fee, which the training partner sets. That fee includes your first exam attempt, provided you take it within 60 days of completing the course.
If you fail, each retake costs US$50. After that, the certification has to be renewed every year: RTE sits in the SAFe Advanced tier, which costs US$295 a year plus applicable tax and also renews the foundational SAFe certifications you hold. Scaled Agile states there are no late fees and no exam retakes required to maintain a certification.

SAFe RTE exam format and passing score
The SAFe RTE exam has 60 multiple-choice, single-select questions and a 120-minute time limit, which gives you two minutes per question. It is web-based and closed book, with no outside assistance, and the timer starts once the questions appear. You have to review and accept Scaled Agile’s Candidate Agreement before you can start.
The passing score is 82%, which means at most ten wrong answers out of 60. That is a higher bar than the foundational SAFe Scrum Master exam and leaves little room for a weak domain.
If you do not pass, the first retake is available immediately, the second ten days after the first retake, the third 30 days after the second, and every further attempt requires a 30-day wait.

What is on the SAFe RTE exam?
Scaled Agile publishes the domains of the AI-Empowered SAFe Release Train Engineer exam as weight ranges. Two domains — the RTE role itself and relentless improvement — carry the most weight, and the new AI domain is almost as large as either of them, so it cannot be skipped as a side topic.

SAFe RTE practice test, exam questions and dumps
Scaled Agile includes an unlimited practice test with the certification, with question-level feedback and a coaching report, and describes it as a simulation and study tool. It is the official reference for the question style, and it was refactored together with the exam for the AI-Empowered release.
Copies of real RTE exam questions are a different matter. Scaled Agile’s Candidate Agreement says you must not seek or use any materials containing actual exam questions or answers, and must not reproduce, use or disclose exam content in any form. Violations can lead to the loss of your SAFe certifications and a suspension or permanent ban from the certification program. A dump is not preparation; it is a risk to every SAFe credential you hold.

How do you renew the SAFe RTE certification?
SAFe certifications renew every year. RTE belongs to the SAFe Advanced tier at US$295 a year plus applicable tax, and that tier also renews any advanced and foundational SAFe certifications you hold. You can renew in Scaled Agile’s platform up to 270 days before expiry, and an expired certification can still be renewed there.
Scaled Agile also lists PMI PDUs and Scrum CEUs among the things you earn with the certification. Its renewal FAQ does not state a CEU count for RTE renewal, so this page does not give one.

SAFe RTE vs SAFe Scrum Master
SAFe Scrum Master is the foundational step: Scaled Agile says no training course is required, and its exam has 45 questions in 90 minutes with 80% to pass. The SAFe Release Train Engineer certification is advanced level: 60 questions in 120 minutes, 82% to pass, with exam access through the course.
The scope differs as much as the numbers. A SAFe Scrum Master serves one agile team; an RTE serves the whole Agile Release Train, facilitates PI Planning for all of its teams and coaches the train. That is why Scaled Agile recommends being familiar with the Scrum Master role before taking the RTE course. On salary, Scaled Agile speaks only of “higher earning potential” and publishes no figures, so this page does not quote any.
