SAFe Scrum Master certification: exam, cost and renewal
The SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) certification from Scaled Agile has been the AI-Empowered SAFe Scrum Master since 28 October 2025; legacy SAFe 6 SSM classes could no longer be taught after 2 December 2025. The exam has 45 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, closed book, and you need 80%. A course is not required — a proctored exam costs US$495 — and renewal is yearly, at US$195 for the Foundational tier.

What is the SAFe Scrum Master certification?
The SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) certification is Scaled Agile’s credential for Scrum Masters working on agile teams inside the Scaled Agile Framework. Where a classic Scrum Master certification focuses on one team, SSM covers the Scrum Master’s role in an Agile Release Train: PI Planning, iteration execution across teams and finishing a Program Increment.
Scaled Agile rates it Foundational and aimed at people new to SAFe. A certified SAFe Scrum Master has passed Scaled Agile’s 45-question exam and keeps the credential current by renewing every year.

AI-Empowered SAFe Scrum Master: what changed in 2025
Scaled Agile replaced the SAFe 6 Scrum Master course with the AI-Empowered SAFe Scrum Master. The current courseware is version 2025.10.28 — Scaled Agile now names releases by date instead of “6.0”. From 28 October 2025 no new legacy SSM classes could be created, and from 2 December 2025 none could be taught.
The certification is now called Certified AI-Empowered SAFe Scrum Master. Existing SAFe 6 SSMs who complete the Empowering Scrum Masters with AI SAFe Skill are upgraded automatically, and their original SAFe 6 SSM credential stays in their records. From then on, only the AI-Empowered SSM is renewed.
The exam has followed: Scaled Agile’s exam details from August 2026 include a domain on augmenting the Scrum Master role with AI, weighted 12–14%. Study material written for SAFe 6 does not cover it.

SAFe Scrum Master exam format and passing score
The SSM exam has 45 multiple-choice, single-select questions in 90 minutes — two minutes per question. It is web-based and closed book, with no outside assistance, and you need 80% to pass, which on 45 questions means at least 36 correct.
Scaled Agile delivers it through a learning plan in SAFe Studio. Besides the timed exam, the certification process includes an unlimited practice test with question-level feedback and a coaching report.

What is on the SAFe Scrum Master exam?
Scaled Agile publishes six domains with weight ranges. Two carry the most: the Scrum Master’s role and facilitating iteration execution, at 21–23% each.

SAFe Scrum Master certification cost
There are two routes, and the SAFe Scrum Master certification cost differs between them. With the course, the first two exam attempts are included in the course registration fee if you take them within 60 days of completing the course. Scaled Agile’s certification page shows no course price.
Without the course — Scaled Agile states the training course is not required — you buy a proctored exam. The proctored exam fee is US$495 plus tax, non-refundable, and includes two attempts within 60 days, booked with a live proctor. After the included attempts, an unproctored retake costs US$50.
Add the yearly renewal: the SAFe Foundational tier, which renews SSM, costs US$195 a year plus tax.

SAFe Scrum Master course and training
The SAFe Scrum Master course is now the AI-Empowered SAFe Scrum Master course. Scaled Agile says the overall duration remained largely unchanged with the AI update. Taking SAFe Scrum Master training is the usual route because it includes the first two exam attempts; it is not a formal prerequisite.
When choosing a SAFe Scrum Master training course, check that it uses the current 2025.10.28 courseware — any SAFe Scrum Master certification course still teaching the legacy SAFe 6 material misses the AI domain on the exam. Whatever SAFe Scrum Master certification training you pick, Scaled Agile’s certification process also includes an unlimited practice test as a study tool.

SAFe Scrum Master with SSM certification: retakes
If you do not pass on your first two included attempts, Scaled Agile’s retake rules for Foundational exams apply: the first paid retake is available immediately, the second after 10 days, the third after 30 days, and any further attempt after another 30 days each.
Once you pass, you are a SAFe Scrum Master with SSM certification in Scaled Agile’s system, listed as Certified AI-Empowered SAFe Scrum Master.

How do you renew the SAFe Scrum Master certification?
Renewal is yearly. SSM is renewed through the SAFe Foundational tier at US$195 a year plus tax, and Scaled Agile’s SSM page asks for 24 continuing education units per two-year cycle, or 12 per year. Scaled Agile states there are no late fees and no exam retakes required to maintain a certification.

SAFe Scrum Master vs SAFe Advanced Scrum Master
The next step in Scaled Agile’s Scrum Master track is the SAFe Advanced Scrum Master (SASM), also updated to an AI-Empowered version. It is renewed through the SAFe Advanced tier at US$295 a year plus tax, which also renews any Foundational certifications you hold, including SSM.
SSM is the starting point: Foundational, no prerequisites, 45 questions. Start there unless you already hold it.

SAFe Scrum Master practice tests, exam questions and dumps
Scaled Agile’s certification process includes an unlimited practice test with question-level feedback and a coaching report. Use it to study the question style, then test yourself on the AI domain separately, since older material lacks it.
Exam dumps break Scaled Agile’s rules. The candidate agreement forbids seeking or using materials containing actual exam questions or answers and disclosing exam content in any form; violations can cost you your certifications and lead to a suspension or permanent ban from the certification program.
