What is the SAS advanced programming certification?
The full name is SAS Certified Professional: Advanced Programming Using SAS 9.4. It is the professional-level step above SAS base programming and is earned by passing a single exam, A00-232.
SAS sums up the skills in three lines: using advanced DATA step programming statements to solve complex problems, writing and interpreting SAS SQL code, and creating and using SAS macros. If your daily SAS work already goes beyond simple DATA steps and PROC PRINT, this is the cert that documents it.
SAS lists no retirement or replacement for this credential, and the exam guide identifies the exam as the SAS 9.4 Advanced Programming performance-based exam. As of 10 October 2026 it is an active, bookable SAS certification.

How much does the SAS advanced programming exam cost?
The A00-232 exam costs $180. SAS states that the exam fee is charged in USD for all countries worldwide, so the listed price is the same wherever you test.
Every attempt is charged separately. The official practice exam, on the other hand, is free: SAS offers its certification practice exams at no cost, and the Advanced Programming Using SAS 9.4 performance-based exam is on that list.

What is the A00-232 exam format?
A00-232 is a performance-based exam. It contains 10–15 programming projects and 10–15 standard exam questions, and you have 2 hours and 5 minutes to complete it. The programming projects are assessed by a SAS scoring macro, which means the output of your code is what counts.
That format rewards people who write SAS code regularly. Recognising the right answer is not enough for the projects: you have to produce a program that runs and returns the expected result within the time limit. The exam guide notes that a reference aid is provided during the exam for the PICTURE format and PRX regular expression topics.
The exam is administered by SAS and Pearson VUE, and you schedule it through SAS’s certification manager.

SAS advanced programming exam passing score
The passing score is 725, on a scale from 200 to 1,000 points. SAS uses scaled scores: in SAS’s words, a scaled score converts the raw score to a standard scale so that all exam forms have the same difficulty.
Because 725 is a scaled score, it cannot be translated into a fixed number of correct projects or questions. Plan to be solid in all three domains rather than aiming for a minimum count.

What is on the SAS advanced programming exam?
SAS splits the exam into three domains. SQL and macros together make up 70%, so a candidate who is strong in DATA step tricks but weak in PROC SQL or the macro language starts at a disadvantage.
The exam guide spells out each domain. Accessing data using SQL covers PROC SQL reports on one or more tables, inner, full, left and right joins, set operators, summary functions with GROUP BY, non-correlated subqueries, in-line views and DICTIONARY tables. Macro processing covers macro variables created with INTO and SYMPUTX, %GLOBAL and %LOCAL scope, macros with parameters, conditional code, AUTOCALL, macro and %SYSFUNC functions, debugging with MLOGIC, MPRINT and SYMBOLGEN, and data-driven programs. Advanced techniques covers arrays, including temporary arrays, hash and hash iterator objects, PICTURE formats, custom functions with PROC FCMP, and functions such as FINDW, COUNTW, LAG and the PRX family.
- Accessing data using SQL — 35%
- Macro processing — 35%
- Advanced techniques — 30%

Retake policy for the A00-232 exam
SAS allows up to five attempts at each certification exam within a 12-month period, with at least 14 days between attempts. Each attempt incurs the exam fee, and attempts that break this rule are invalid and not refundable.
Once you pass a specific exam, SAS allows no further attempts on that exam, so there is no retaking A00-232 to improve a passing score.

Does the SAS advanced programming certification expire?
The A00-232 credential page states no expiration. SAS’s certification FAQ explains that some SAS credentials do expire, that the expiry is shown in the exam details, on the certificate and on the badge, and that the absence of an expiry statement indicates the certificate does not currently expire.
