SAS Base Programming certification: the A00-231 exam explained
The SAS Base Programming certification — officially SAS Certified Specialist: Base Programming Using SAS 9.4 — is SAS’s credential for people new to SAS programming. You earn it by passing exam A00-231, a performance-based exam with 40–45 multiple-choice and short-answer questions in 135 minutes. The passing score is 725 on a 200–1,000 scale, the fee is US$180, and there are no prerequisites listed by SAS.

What is the SAS Base Programming certification?
SAS describes Base Programming Specialist as a credential for those new to SAS programming that proves your ability to write and execute SAS code. The full name is SAS Certified Specialist: Base Programming Using SAS 9.4, and it is earned with a single exam, A00-231.
SAS lists four abilities the credential validates: reading and creating data files, creating basic detail and summary reports with Base SAS procedures, manipulating and transforming data, and identifying and correcting syntax and programming logic errors.
Whether you call it a SAS base programming certificate or a certification, it is the same credential — and it is the foundation of SAS’s programming track. SAS states that a Base Programming credential is required to earn an Advanced Programming credential.

How much does the SAS Base Programming exam cost?
The A00-231 exam costs US$180, a price SAS lists as applying in the US and most other countries. Students and educators can take SAS global certification exams for US$75 after registering through SAS’s academic portal; that discount voucher is valid for one attempt and should be used within 90 days.
Budget per attempt, not per credential: SAS charges for each exam attempt. You may attempt the exam up to five times in a 12-month period, with at least 14 days between attempts, and once you pass, no further attempts are allowed on that exam.

A00-231 exam format: what “performance-based” means
The exam is called the SAS 9.4 Base Programming Performance-Based Exam. It has 40–45 multiple-choice and short-answer questions and you have 135 minutes. It is based on SAS 9.4 M5.
Performance-based means you are expected to work with SAS rather than recall syntax from memory alone. SAS’s practice exam page states that performance-based practice exams require access to SAS software, which tells you how to prepare: write and run code, read the log, and check your output.
The exam is administered by SAS and Pearson VUE, and SAS says exams are generally scheduled through Pearson VUE. Pearson VUE runs an online testing page for SAS with its system requirements; check at booking whether A00-231 is offered online in your location.

SAS Base Programming passing score
SAS publishes the passing score: 725 on a score range from 200 to 1,000 points. It is a scaled score, so it does not translate directly into a fixed number of correct answers.
Because every main objective is tested on every exam (see below), a high score in one domain cannot fully hide a gap in another. Aim for solid coverage of all four domains rather than depth in your favourite one.

What is on the A00-231 exam?
SAS splits the exam into four weighted domains. Managing data is the largest, at 35–40%: sorting, conditional logic, assignment statements, BY-group processing, functions, DO loops, PROC TRANSPOSE and macro variables all sit here.
The exam content guide states that all 23 main objectives will be tested on every exam, while 72 expanded objectives define everything that could appear. Error handling is its own domain — debugging with PUTLOG and the _N_ and _ERROR_ variables, and diagnosing syntax errors from the log — so reading the SAS log is a tested skill, not a side note.
- Access and create data structures — 20–25% (libraries, importing data, combining data sets, dates, subsetting)
- Manage data — 35–40% (sorting, conditional logic, functions, DO loops, PROC TRANSPOSE, macro variables)
- Error handling — 15–20% (PUTLOG, _N_ and _ERROR_, syntax errors in the log)
- Generate reports and output — 15–20% (PROC PRINT, FREQ, MEANS, UNIVARIATE, formats, ODS, export)

SAS base programming course and training
SAS’s own learning pathway for this credential on learn.sas.com recommends three courses: SAS Programming 1: Essentials, SAS Programming 2: Data Manipulation Techniques, and the SAS Certification Review for the Base Programming Performance-Based Exam.
Take them in that order: the essentials first, then data manipulation — the course title that lines up with the heaviest exam domain, managing data — and the certification review last, close to your exam date. SAS does not list course prices on the pathway page.
There are no formal prerequisites on the credential page, so you can take the exam whenever your skills are ready.

How to study for the SAS Base Programming exam
Start with the exam content guide and turn each main objective into something you can do in code. For each one, write a short program, run it, break it on purpose and fix it from the log — that covers both the content and the error-handling domain.
SAS also provides free sample questions and a practice exam for A00-231 through its pathway. SAS’s practice exam page explains that its practice exams give you 180 days of access, can be retaken as often as you like, include a virtual lab if you do not have SAS installed, and end with a score report that explains the correct answers.
Leave the practice exam until you have covered all four domains, then use its score report to decide where the last weeks of study go.

Does the SAS Base Programming certification expire?
SAS states that some of its credentials expire, and that the absence of an expiry statement means a certificate does not currently expire. The Base Programming Specialist credential page contains no expiry statement.
SAS runs the SAS Certification and Skills Directory, a badge-based system powered by Credly, which is where SAS credentials are displayed and can be checked online.

SAS Base Programming vs Advanced Programming
Base Programming is the starting point; Advanced Programming Professional is the next step in SAS’s programming track. SAS states that a Base Programming credential is required to earn an Advanced Programming credential, so the order is fixed.
If you are new to SAS, there is no shortcut: pass A00-231 first. If you already work with SAS daily, Base still has to be earned before Advanced, though your preparation may be shorter.

Exam integrity and SAS base programming practice questions
SAS candidates agree not to disclose, copy, photograph or share exam questions in any way. SAS’s exam integrity page names material advertised as “brain-dumps” or “dumps” as a warning sign, states that the only question-containing study materials it considers authorized are those linked from its certification site, and warns that violations can result in revocation of certifications and invalidation of exam results.
Certsqill’s SAS Base Programming practice questions are expert-developed: every question explains each answer option, and you see a readiness score for each of the four exam domains.
