ServiceNow Certified Master Architect (CMA): program, board exam and requirements
The ServiceNow Certified Master Architect (CMA) is one of ServiceNow’s Expert Certifications, the highest level it offers. It is not a standalone test: candidates who meet the prerequisites apply, are accepted into a six-month program of bi-weekly live webinars, immersion events, assessments and cohort work, and earn the certification by passing a final board exam. ServiceNow does not publish cost or salary figures on its public CMA pages.

What is the ServiceNow Certified Master Architect?
ServiceNow describes a Certified Master Architect as a highly skilled advisor who guides and supports customers in designing, governing and implementing complex digital transformation strategies with ServiceNow.
It sits in ServiceNow’s Expert Certifications, next to the Certified Technical Architect. ServiceNow calls these the highest level of certifications it offers and the gateway to being recognised as a leader in the ServiceNow field, and says they require a special mastery of both technical and communication skills.
That second half matters. The CMA is not awarded for platform knowledge alone; it is awarded for being able to stand in front of a panel and argue for an architecture.

How the CMA program works
ServiceNow states that the CMA designation is awarded to those who have met the prerequisites and have applied and been accepted into a six-month program. The program involves live bi-weekly webinars, immersion events, assessments and cohort activities.
ServiceNow University also publishes a CMA Program learning path, which it says provides components of the required training, supplemented by in-person and live events. In other words, the certification is earned inside a cohort over half a year, not booked as a one-off exam appointment.
ServiceNow does not publish cohort dates, application windows or the time commitment per week on a publicly readable page.

The ServiceNow CMA board exam
Certification is awarded to those who successfully complete the final board exam. Candidates receive a case study and must design, present and defend their architectural solution before a panel of personas.
ServiceNow’s public pages do not give the length of the board exam or the scoring criteria. What the format tells you is enough to plan: you are judged on the solution and on how you defend it, so the decisions behind each design choice matter as much as the design itself.

ServiceNow CMA requirements and how to apply
ServiceNow says candidates must meet the CMA prerequisites before applying and links them from the Expert Programs site. That site, and the knowledge article “Certified Master Architect (CMA): How to Apply”, load only inside the ServiceNow University portal, so the detailed requirements could not be verified from a public page.
Requirements quoted on community blogs or job ads are not ServiceNow’s own statements and may be out of date. Check the How to Apply article in ServiceNow University for the current list before planning your application.

How much does the ServiceNow CMA cost?
ServiceNow does not publish the CMA program fee on a publicly readable page; the expert program pages load only inside the ServiceNow University portal.
Because the program includes immersion events, ask before you apply whether the fee covers attendance and which travel costs fall to you or your employer.

ServiceNow Master Architect salary
ServiceNow does not publish salary data for Certified Master Architects. Figures circulating online come from job boards or surveys, not from ServiceNow, and are not repeated here.
What ServiceNow does say is how it positions the credential: as the gateway to being recognised as a leader in the ServiceNow field, for advisors who guide customers through complex digital transformation. Whether that translates into pay is a matter for the employer and the market you work in.

ServiceNow CMA vs CTA
The Certified Technical Architect is the other expert certification. ServiceNow requires at least three years of ServiceNow subject matter expertise for CTA, and the CTA designation goes to those who complete a 12-week program of self-paced modules, cohort case studies and weekly live sessions, ending with a capstone in which they design, present and defend a solution.
CMA follows the same idea at greater depth: six months instead of twelve weeks, immersion events, and a board exam before a panel. ServiceNow positions the CTA around translating business and technical requirements into architectural blueprints, and the CMA around advising customers on whole transformation strategies.
Note on CTA status: ServiceNow states that the CTA exam retired on 3 May 2026, with a beta exam from 4 May to 21 June 2026 and later dates to be determined. That change concerns CTA, not the CMA.

How to prepare for the ServiceNow Certified Master Architect
The official preparation is the program itself and its CMA learning path. Before applying, the best use of time is rehearsing the board format on real work: take a past project, write down the architecture you chose, and practise explaining each decision and its trade-offs to someone who will push back.
Strong platform knowledge is the base the board takes for granted — data model, integrations, security, instance strategy and governance. Gaps there show up immediately when a panel asks why you chose one approach over another.
