PfMP certification: requirements, exam format and cost
PfMP — Portfolio Management Professional — is PMI’s certification for senior practitioners who manage portfolios of projects, programmes and operations. You need eight years of professional business experience plus three to seven years of portfolio management experience, depending on your degree, and you must pass a panel review before the exam: 170 questions in 240 minutes, in English only. PMI publishes no single price and no passing score.

What is the PfMP certification?
PfMP stands for Portfolio Management Professional. It is issued by PMI, the Project Management Institute, and PMI describes it as proof that you have the advanced skills to manage and align multiple projects, programmes and operations with an organisation’s strategy.
PMI aims the Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP) certification at executives and senior-level practitioners who manage a portfolio. It sits at the top of PMI’s project, programme and portfolio ladder: where PMP is about running projects and PgMP about running programmes, PfMP is about choosing, prioritising and balancing the whole set of initiatives so that they deliver strategy.
That shows in the eligibility rules. PMI requires eight years of professional business experience before it will consider an application, on top of dedicated portfolio management experience — and a panel of experienced portfolio managers reviews that experience before you are allowed to sit the exam.

PfMP certification requirements
PMI offers three sets of PfMP requirements. All three need 96 months (eight years) of professional business experience within the past 15 years. What changes is the education and the amount of portfolio management experience on top.
The experience is checked twice. First, a panel of volunteer portfolio managers assesses your summary application responses. Second, PMI may select your application for an audit, which requires a copy of your degree and proof of your experience. The Handbook states that you cannot continue to the exam without passing the panel review.
- Set A — secondary diploma: 96 months business experience + 84 months (7 years) portfolio management experience
- Set B — bachelor’s degree or higher: 96 months business experience + 48 months (4 years) portfolio management experience
- Set C — bachelor’s degree from a GAC-accredited programme: 96 months business experience + 36 months (3 years) portfolio management experience

How much does the PfMP certification cost?
PMI does not publish a single PfMP price on the PfMP page or in the PfMP Handbook. The Handbook sends candidates to the Certification menu on PMI.org for up-to-date prices, and PMI’s general Certification Handbook states that prices vary with membership status and regional location.
The order of payment is fixed: PMI reviews your application, you pay the exam fee once you verify your acceptance, and then the panel review takes place. Only after you pass the panel review can you schedule the exam.
Plan for two further costs. PMI states that fees must be paid again for a second or third attempt, and the PfMP Handbook lists a US$70 fee for rescheduling or cancelling within 30 days of your appointment.

PfMP exam format
The PfMP exam has 170 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 240 minutes, or four hours. Twenty of the 170 are unscored pretest questions that PMI uses to trial new items, so 150 count towards your result. You cannot tell which are which.
The exam is offered in English only. The PfMP Handbook describes it as a computer-based examination and states that you may take it up to three times within a one-year eligibility period.
PMI does not publish a passing score. Its Certification Handbook says only that the passing score for all PMI exams is determined by sound psychometric analysis, so aim for consistent strength across all five domains rather than a number.

What is on the PfMP exam?
PMI lists five PfMP domains with fixed weights. Strategic alignment and portfolio performance carry 25% each — half the exam between them — which reflects what portfolio management is for: picking the right initiatives and showing that they deliver.
Governance follows at 20%, and risk and communications management at 15% each. The communications domain is easy to underrate; at the portfolio level it is about keeping executives and stakeholders aligned on priorities, not about status reports.
- Strategic Alignment — 25%
- Portfolio Performance — 25%
- Governance — 20%
- Portfolio Risk Management — 15%
- Communications Management — 15%

PfMP training and courses
PMI’s PfMP page lists no required number of education hours: the gate is experience and the panel review, not classroom time. PfMP training is therefore a choice, not a requirement.
For a study plan, PMI’s own starting point is the standard the exam is built on, The Standard for Portfolio Management – Fourth Edition, which PMI makes free for members, together with the PMBOK Guide and the PfMP Exam Reference List on the PfMP page. PMI does not list a PfMP-specific course of its own on that page.
If you choose a PfMP course — self-paced, live online or an intensive bootcamp — check it against the five domains and the reference list. A good PfMP training programme spends real time on strategic alignment and portfolio performance, because together they are half the exam.

How long is PfMP valid, and how do you renew it?
PfMP runs on a three-year cycle. PMI states that PfMP holders need to earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) in each three-year cycle to maintain the certification.
Sixty PDUs over three years is about 20 a year. Log them as you earn them rather than leaving the whole amount to the end of the cycle.

PfMP salary: what PMI does and does not publish
PMI does not publish a PfMP salary figure on its PfMP page, and we do not quote salary numbers that do not come from the certifying body.
What PMI does state is who the credential is for: executives and senior practitioners managing portfolios of projects, programmes and operations. The career value of PfMP comes from that seniority and from the fact that the experience behind it has been checked by a panel, not from a published pay figure.

PfMP exam questions and confidentiality
Expect scenario questions that ask what a portfolio manager should do or decide next, built on The Standard for Portfolio Management. Good practice questions copy that style and the domain weights, and they explain why each option is right or wrong.
Real exam questions are off-limits. PMI’s Certification Handbook says that discussing exam questions would be a potential violation of the Certification Application/Renewal Agreement, with sanctions up to and including revocation of the certification or permanent suspension from PMI exams.

PfMP practice questions on Certsqill
