PgMP certification: requirements, exam and cost
PgMP — Program Management Professional — is PMI’s certification for people who manage several related projects as one program. You need four to seven years of program management experience depending on your degree, plus project management experience or a PMP. A panel of PgMP holders reviews your experience first; then comes an exam of 170 questions in 240 minutes. PMI publishes no single fee and no passing score.

What is PgMP certification?
PgMP stands for Program Management Professional. The PMI PgMP certification is issued by the Project Management Institute and, in PMI’s words, demonstrates an advanced level of expertise through managing multiple projects in a coordinated way. A program, in PMI’s sense, is a group of related projects run together to deliver benefits that the projects would not deliver separately.
That makes the PgMP — Program Management Professional — certification a step beyond PMP rather than a replacement for it. PMP is about running a project; PgMP is about aligning several projects with strategy, managing benefits across them and governing the whole. Being PgMP certified tells employers you have done that work for years, because PMI checks it before you may sit the exam.

PgMP certification requirements
PMI offers three eligibility sets. Each combines a degree level with project management experience — which a PMP earned within the past 15 years can replace — and program management experience within the past 15 years. The higher your degree, the less program experience you need.
Note what the PgMP requirements do not include: unlike PMP, PMI’s PgMP eligibility sets list no required training hours. Experience is the gate.
- Secondary diploma: 48 months of project management experience or a PMP, plus 84 months of program management experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher: 48 months of project management experience or a PMP, plus 48 months of program management experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from a GAC-accredited program: 36 months of project management experience or a PMP, plus 36 months of program management experience

The PgMP panel review
PgMP has a step that most certifications do not. After your application is accepted and you have paid, a panel of volunteer PgMP-certified program managers assesses your professional experience based on your written summary responses. PMI’s Certification Handbook describes it as essay questions graded by panels of external subject matter experts.
If you fail the panel review once, the PgMP Handbook lets you update your experience summaries. If you fail a second time, your application is closed and your exam fee is refunded. Only after passing the panel review can you schedule the exam. PMI adds that your answers must be your own — having someone else write them goes against PMI ethics.

PgMP certification cost
PMI does not print a PgMP exam price on the PgMP page or in the PgMP Handbook; the page says only that you pay your exam fee once your application is accepted. PMI’s Certification Handbook states that prices may vary based on membership status and regional location, and that member rates apply only if you joined before paying.
So the PgMP certification cost is something you see in your PMI account, not something any outside page can quote reliably. Plan two more cost items: fees are paid again for a second or third exam attempt, and renewal every three years requires 60 PDUs.

PgMP exam format and passing score
The PgMP exam has 170 multiple-choice questions, of which 150 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest items you cannot identify. You have 240 minutes — about 85 seconds per question. PMI offers the exam in English and Chinese (Simplified), and the PgMP Handbook names center-based testing as the standard delivery method.
PMI does not publish a PgMP passing score; its Certification Handbook says only that the passing score for all PMI exams is determined by psychometric analysis. You have a one-year eligibility period after approval and may take the exam up to three times within it.

What is on the PgMP exam? The domains
The PgMP syllabus is PMI’s PgMP Examination Content Outline from March 2024: five domains with 72 tasks in total. One domain dominates — program life cycle management carries 44%, almost as much as the other four combined.
PMI’s certification page labels the 11% domain “Business Alignment”; the content outline calls it Benefits Management. It is the same domain and weight.
- Strategic Program Alignment — 15%
- Program Life Cycle Management — 44%
- Benefits Management — 11%
- Stakeholder Engagement — 16%
- Governance — 14%

PgMP training and courses
Because PgMP requires no training hours, a PgMP course is a study choice, not a prerequisite. PMI lists The Standard for Program Management, Fifth Edition, and the PMBOK Guide among its prep resources; the standard is the closest thing to an official textbook for the exam.
PgMP training comes in the usual formats: self-paced PgMP online training, live virtual classes, and short, intensive PgMP boot camp courses — some providers call theirs a PgMP bootcamp. When comparing PgMP training courses, check three things: that the PgMP certification training follows the March 2024 content outline and its 44% weighting on program life cycle management, that it covers the panel review summaries as well as the exam, and that a PgMP course online includes timed practice.
PMI sets no training price because it sets no training requirement; PgMP courses online and in the classroom are priced by their providers. Whether you pick PgMP training online or a classroom PgMP training course, the content outline is the yardstick.

PgMP practice test and exam questions
A useful PgMP practice test mirrors the real exam: scenario questions across all five domains, weighted towards program life cycle management, at roughly 85 seconds per question. Take at least one full 170-question run as part of your PgMP exam prep before you book.
PgMP exam questions passed around as copies of the live exam — dumps — are a different matter. PMI’s Certification Handbook treats discussing exam questions after the exam as a potential violation of the Certification Application/Renewal Agreement, with sanctions up to revocation of certification or permanent suspension from PMI exams.
Certsqill’s PgMP practice questions explain each answer option, and you see a readiness score per domain.

PgMP salary: is PgMP worth it?
PMI makes two salary claims on its PgMP page: “42% higher earnings for program managers with the PgMP certification than non-PgMP program professionals”, and that 23% of surveyed PgMP holders globally reported a salary increase after becoming certified. PMI does not name the survey or method on the page, so read these as PMI’s own figures, not as an independent PgMP certification salary benchmark.
Is PgMP worth it? It depends on your role. If you already run programs — several related projects tied to strategy and benefits — PgMP is the PMI credential that matches that work. If you mostly manage single projects, the experience requirement will block you anyway.

How do you renew PgMP?
PgMP holders must earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) in each three-year cycle to maintain the certification. Record them as you go rather than at the end of the cycle.
