SAP’s current ABAP Cloud certification is the Back-End Developer – ABAP Cloud, exam code C_ABAPD. SAP runs it as a beta version of a practical exam: three hours, system-based, in English, solved in your own Eclipse with ABAP Development Tools, with a pass score of 67%. You need an SAP Learning Hub subscription with certification exam attempts, and SAP certifications are valid for one year.

What is the SAP ABAP Cloud certification?
The SAP Certified – Back-End Developer – ABAP Cloud is SAP’s certification for developers who build on ABAP Cloud. SAP says the exam verifies that you are familiar with the core principles of the ABAP programming language, that you can develop applications with the ABAP RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP), and that you can use Joule for developers, SAP’s generative AI assistant.
For most people searching for an SAP ABAP certification today, this is the one SAP lists for ABAP Cloud development. The exam code is C_ABAPD, and SAP files it under developer and consultant roles with skills such as cloud application development, SQL, object-oriented design and the ABAP development environment.

Status: a beta version of a practical exam
SAP labels the certification “Beta Version” and states plainly that this is a beta version of the practical exam. SAP does not publish an end date for the beta on the certification page.
Two consequences for candidates. First, the format is practical: SAP classes the exam as system-based, and you work in your own development environment. Second, details can still change while the exam is in beta, so read the certification page and the Technical Readiness Checklist again right before you take it.

SAP ABAP certification exam format and pass score
The exam lasts three hours and SAP classes it as system-based. It is available in English. You complete it in your own installation of Eclipse with ABAP Development Tools (ADT), and SAP asks that both Eclipse and ADT are on the highest available release before you start.
The pass score is 67%. SAP does not publish how the exam is structured internally or a weighting by topic on the certification page.
Because the work happens in your own development environment, technical readiness is part of the exam. SAP’s Technical Readiness Checklist covers the hardware, software and connectivity requirements; go through it before exam day rather than on it.

How much does the SAP ABAP certification cost?
SAP does not print a price on the certification page. Access runs through an SAP Learning Hub subscription that includes SAP Certification exam attempts, and SAP states that each exam attempt counts as one attempt from your subscription. The exam page shows how many attempts you have left.
So the cost depends on the subscription you or your employer hold. Check the attempts included before you plan a retake, because each try uses one.

What is on the exam?
SAP names three content areas on the certification page: the core principles of the ABAP programming language, application development with the ABAP RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP), and using Joule for developers, SAP’s generative AI assistant.
SAP does not publish percentage weights for these areas. Prepare for all three as if each could decide the result, and practise the full RAP flow — data model, behaviour, service — in the tools you will use on the day.

What you need before you start
SAP lists three things to set up: a Learning Hub subscription that includes SAP Certification exam attempts, a valid SAP Universal ID with a secondary email, and a system that meets the Technical Readiness Checklist.
Add a fourth that SAP spells out in the exam notes: Eclipse and ADT installed and updated to the highest available release. Sorting this out a few days ahead removes the most avoidable reason to lose time in a three-hour practical exam.

SAP ABAP training and exam prep
SAP’s recommended preparation is the learning journey “Acquiring Core ABAP Skills”, which SAP links from the certification page with the advice to review the suggested topics before you take the exam.
The most useful piece of exam prep SAP offers is the practice system: SAP says you will find it within that learning journey. Use it to get comfortable with the environment, since the exam itself is practical.
Any other SAP ABAP training you consider should be checked against the three content areas above — core ABAP, RAP and Joule for developers — and should include hands-on work in Eclipse with ADT.

How long is the SAP ABAP cert valid?
SAP states that SAP Certifications are valid for one year. To stay certified, you complete a short annual assessment that extends validity by 12 months, and you need an active SAP Learning Hub subscription to take it.
Without a subscription, SAP’s help center says you will need to take the full practical exam again; it also mentions purchasing and retaking an SAP Certification exam every year as an alternative.

Is the SAP ABAP certification worth it?
SAP publishes no salary or career statistics on the certification page, and this page does not quote any from elsewhere. What the certification does show is concrete: that you can build with ABAP Cloud and RAP in the real tools, under time pressure, in a practical exam.
Two practical points belong in the decision. The certification needs a yearly assessment to stay valid, and the exam is still in beta. If you work with ABAP Cloud every day, the exam tests what you already do; if not, start with the learning journey and the practice system.
