The PMP exam: format, content outline, scoring and difficulty

PMI launched an updated PMP exam on 9 July 2026. It has 180 questions in 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks, and its content outline now weights People at 33%, Process at 41% and Business Environment at 26%. PMI publishes no passing score and no pass rate — this page sets out what it does publish, and what that means for your preparation.

PMP exam format and question types

The PMP exam format, as PMI’s July 2026 content outline sets it: 180 questions, of which ten are pretest questions that do not affect your score. That leaves 170 scored questions — and you cannot tell which ones are pretest while you sit the exam.

The question types go well beyond plain multiple choice. The outline lists:

  • Case or scenario questions — a detailed situation, sometimes with graphs or charts, followed by several questions
  • Multiple choice with a single response, and multiple-response questions
  • Graphic-based questions
  • Matching and enhanced matching
  • Point and click, and pull-down lists

PMP test duration and breaks

How long does the PMP exam take? The PMP exam duration is 240 minutes, and PMI’s certification page states that this includes two 10-minute breaks. The first break comes after the case-study section, the second roughly midway through the remaining questions. Once you start a break, you cannot go back to the questions before it.

Spread over the whole paper, the PMP exam length works out at 80 seconds per question. You can sit the exam in person at a Pearson VUE test center, which PMI recommends, or online; for the online exam PMI requires a system test, a private space and a valid photo ID.

PMP exam changes 2026: what PMI updated

PMI launched the updated exam on 9 July 2026. The biggest of the PMP exam changes is the weighting: Business Environment rises from 8% to 26% of the exam, while People falls from 42% to 33% and Process from 50% to 41%. PMI also names new content — AI, sustainability and stakeholder engagement in project-based scenarios — and a shift towards outcomes, value and business impact.

Is the new PMP exam harder, or will the new PMP exam be harder than the one you prepared for? PMI lists that exact question in its FAQ but gives no measure of difficulty, and it publishes no pass rate for either version — so nobody can answer it with data. What PMI does say is that the “core principles and approaches” of the exam remain the same for anyone who studied older material.

The other PMP certification change concerns training, not the exam. From 1 December 2026, live classes count towards the 35 required hours only if they are delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited higher education programme. Training completed before that date remains eligible.

What the new PMP exam questions look like

The new PMP exam format adds case and scenario questions and graphic-based questions, and candidates may work through a fuller case. PMI’s announcement says scenario questions may include AI tools such as dashboards and other project artefacts, and that sustainability is woven into the planning, quality, compliance and risk decisions that shape projects.

PMI describes the aim of the update as maintaining “the rigor expected of a global recognized certification” — it does not say the exam became easier or harder.

The PMP exam content outline (ECO)

The PMI PMP exam content outline is the official definition of what the exam covers — the PMP certification syllabus in all but name. The current version is the new PMP exam content outline 2026, published for the July update. You can download the PMP exam content outline PDF from pmi.org; it describes three domains, each broken down into tasks:

  • People — 33%, 8 tasks: develop a common vision, manage conflicts, lead the project team, engage stakeholders, align and manage stakeholder expectations, help ensure knowledge transfer, plan and manage communication
  • Process — 41%, 10 tasks: integrated project management plan and delivery, scope, value-based delivery, resources, procurement, finance, quality, schedule, project status and project closure
  • Business Environment — 26%, 8 tasks: project governance, compliance, managing and controlling changes, removing impediments and managing issues, risk, continuous improvement, organisational change, and changes in the external business environment

Exam topics: PMP domains across predictive, agile and hybrid work

The topics are not split by method. According to the outline, about 40% of the questions represent predictive project management, and the remaining 60% are divided between adaptive (agile) and hybrid approaches. All three appear across all three domains, so a question about scope or risk can be set in an agile team just as well as in a plan-driven project.

That matters when you choose material. When you compare a PMP course outline against the exam, check that agile and hybrid delivery get real weight; a PMP course syllabus that treats them as a short add-on chapter does not match how the exam is built.

PMP exam outline 2025 and older versions

If you download a PMP exam content outline 2025 PDF, you get the outline that applied before the July 2026 update, with People at 42%, Process at 50% and Business Environment at 8%. If you are booking now, that is the wrong document to study from.

The older figures also linger in PMI’s own PMP Handbook, which still gives 230 minutes and five pretest questions. Both the current content outline and the PMP certification page give 240 minutes; for the exam you book today, follow those.

Score to pass PMP exam: what PMI publishes

So what score do you need to pass the PMP exam? Nothing in numbers is published. PMI does not publish a PMP exam passing score — not as a percentage and not as a number of questions — in its Certification Handbook, its PMP Handbook or on the certification page. There is no PMP passing percentage to aim for.

That is also why you will not find an official PMP passing score 2025 table, or a PMP passing score 2026 update after the July change: there is nothing published to update. Any figure presented as the official PMP score to pass is not one PMI has released.

How is the PMP exam scored?

PMI’s Certification Handbook says that “the passing score for all PMI exams is determined by sound psychometric analysis”, based on whether candidates met the criteria for a qualified person in the job role being tested. The PMP Handbook adds that the scoring model “is periodically reviewed by scoring experts”. Pretest questions do not count towards your result.

Your PMP exam score report shows the overall pass or fail and, for each domain, diagnostic information on your performance. That breakdown is useful whether you passed or need to plan another attempt.

How long to get PMP exam results

When you finish a computer-based exam you receive a copy of your score report. For the PMP, PMI treats that result as preliminary until it confirms that it is official. The Certification Handbook says your exam report is available in PMI’s online certification results system no later than 10 business days after your exam date, and PMI emails you when it is there.

Source: PMI — Certification Handbook (revised June 2026). Checked 9 October 2026.

What is the PMP pass rate?

PMI does not publish one. There is no official PMP exam pass rate, no PMP pass percentage and no PMP first-time pass rate in its handbooks or on its PMP pages. A figure you see quoted elsewhere is someone else’s claim; PMI has not released the data to check it against.

Nor does your own result show a PMP certification pass percentage: the score report gives pass or fail and a diagnostic per domain, not a percentage. What PMI does document is the attempt rule — a one-year eligibility period with up to three attempts.

Source: PMI — Certification Handbook (revised June 2026). Checked 9 October 2026.

How hard is the PMP exam?

There is no official PMP exam difficulty level. With no published pass rate, no data ranks PMP test difficulty against other certifications, and PMI publishes no PMP exam difficulty ranking. What the published facts do show is where the difficulty of PMP exam questions comes from:

  • Length: 180 questions across four hours, with two short breaks — concentration is part of the test.
  • Scenarios: case studies and scenario questions ask what you would do next in a situation, not what a term means.
  • Breadth: three domains and 26 tasks, set in predictive, agile and hybrid contexts.
  • Pace: 80 seconds per question, including time for the longer case material.

Is PMP certification hard? The exam versus the entry bar

When people ask how hard is PMP certification, they usually mean the exam. But the PMP certification difficulty level is set as much by what comes before it: PMI requires two to five years of documented project management experience, depending on your education, plus 35 hours of training, before you may sit the exam at all.

So how hard is it to get a PMP certification overall? For someone who already leads projects, the experience is a matter of documenting what they have done; for someone who does not, there is no way around it. PMI’s CAPM is the certification without that experience bar, and an active CAPM also covers the 35 training hours for the PMP.

How long does a PMP certification take?

The exam is the short part. How long to get PMP certified depends mostly on the experience requirement: three years of project management experience with a bachelor’s degree, four with an associate degree or vocational diploma, five with a high school diploma, or two with a degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center programme — plus 35 hours of training. So the total PMP certification length, from first project to credential, is measured in years.

Once you meet those requirements you apply. How long for PMP certification approval? PMI’s PMP Handbook gives a processing time of 5 calendar days for online applications. If your application is picked for PMI’s random audit, you have 90 days to send the documents, and the audit itself should take about 5–7 business days. After approval you have one year to pass the exam.

Source: PMI — PMP Handbook. Checked 9 October 2026.

How long does the PMP certification last?

Three years. The PMP certification duration is a three-year cycle: PMI’s Certification Handbook requires renewal every three years, and you can call yourself a PMP for as long as your certification is active. And how long is a PMP certification good for if you keep renewing? Indefinitely — each cycle needs 60 professional development units, at least 35 of them in Education and at most 25 in Giving Back.

How long to study for the PMP

So how long does it take to study for the PMP? PMI does not set a study time, and we will not invent one. How long does it take to prepare for PMP exam day depends on how much of the content outline you already practise at work, how familiar you are with agile and hybrid delivery, and how much time you can give it each week.

The one fixed number is the training requirement: 35 hours of project management education before you can apply. That is the minimum duration of PMP course training that counts towards eligibility, and from 1 December 2026 live classes must come from a provider PMI recognises.

A better question than “how many weeks” is “how will I know I am ready”. Measure your performance per domain against the outline, and book once you are consistently strong in all three — not just in the domain closest to your job.

Tips for passing the PMP exam

Passing the PMP exam is mostly about matching your preparation to how PMI builds it. Generic tips for passing PMP exam questions, such as eliminating two options first, only go so far. These PMP exam tips follow directly from the content outline:

  • Study from the July 2026 content outline, not an older one. Business Environment is now 26% of the exam, not 8%.
  • Practise scenario questions under time pressure. At 80 seconds per question, recognising the right answer is not enough — you need to see quickly why the other options are wrong.
  • Cover agile and hybrid as seriously as predictive. Only about 40% of questions are predictive.
  • Rehearse the case-study section and your break plan. You cannot return to earlier questions after a break.
  • Track readiness per domain. Your score report breaks your result down by domain, so prepare the same way.

Sitting the PMP exam: how to pass on your first try

Most advice on how to pass the PMP exam on the first try skips the cost side: every retake means paying again, even though PMI discounts re-examinations. Knowing how to pass the PMP on your first try therefore starts with an honest readiness check before you book, not after.

There is no trick to how to pass PMP beyond that. You have one year from approval and up to three attempts; use that time to close your weakest domain rather than to book early and hope.

Can a PMP bootcamp guarantee a pass?

No one can guarantee you will pass. PMI does not publish its passing score, so no provider can know in advance where the line is — a “PMP bootcamp guaranteed pass” offer is really a promise about refunds or free repeats, not about the exam itself. Read the terms closely: what counts as a failed attempt, what you have to complete first, and what you actually get back.

What matters more is whether the course counts. From 1 December 2026, live classes count towards the 35 training hours only from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited higher education programme.

New case/scenario and graphic-based questions, new domain weights (People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26%) and new content on AI, sustainability and stakeholder engagement. Source: PMI, checked 9 October 2026.

What is a passing score on the PMP exam?

PMI does not publish one. Its Certification Handbook says the passing score for all PMI exams is determined by psychometric analysis, without giving a figure. Checked 9 October 2026.

What is PMP passing score based on?

On psychometric analysis of whether candidates meet the criteria for a qualified person in the job role, according to PMI’s Certification Handbook. The resulting score itself is not published.

How is PMP exam scored — as a percentage?

No percentage is published. You receive an overall pass or fail plus diagnostic information for each domain; the ten pretest questions do not count.

Is there a minimum PMP exam score to pass?

There is a passing standard, but PMI does not publish it as a number or a percentage. Checked 9 October 2026.

What is the pass rate for the PMP exam?

PMI does not publish a PMP certification pass rate, a pass percentage or a first-time pass rate. Checked 9 October 2026.

Is there an official PMP pass rate, first attempt or overall?

Neither. PMI’s handbooks and PMP pages give no pass rate of any kind, checked 9 October 2026.

What percentage pass PMP exam on first try, according to PMI?

PMI does not say. It publishes no first-attempt figure; it documents only that you may take the exam up to three times within your one-year eligibility period.

Is there an official pass rate for PMP certification by country?

No. PMI publishes no pass rate for PMP certification at all, by country or overall.

Is the PMP exam hard?

PMI publishes no difficulty measure. The exam is long — 180 questions in 240 minutes — scenario-based and spread across three domains and predictive, agile and hybrid approaches, and you need two to five years of project experience to sit it.

Is PMP certification hard for someone new to project management?

You cannot take it yet: PMI requires two to five years of project management experience first. PMI’s CAPM is the certification without that experience requirement.

Is the PMP certification hard to get?

The hardest part for many people is the entry bar rather than the paper: documented project experience plus 35 hours of training before PMI approves you to sit the exam.

Is PMP certification difficult without agile experience?

Expect to study more. About 60% of questions are set in adaptive (agile) or hybrid approaches, according to the July 2026 content outline, so agile has to be studied seriously even if your projects are plan-driven.

How hard is it to get PMP certification if I already manage projects?

Easier on eligibility, not on the exam. Your experience covers the entry requirement, but the exam tests PMI’s view of good practice across predictive, agile and hybrid work, which may differ from how your organisation runs projects.

How hard is the PMP certification exam compared with the application?

They are different kinds of hard. The application requires you to document your experience project by project; the exam is 180 questions in 240 minutes across three domains.

How hard is it to pass the PMP exam without a published pass mark?

It means you cannot aim for a number. Aim instead for consistent strength in all three domains — the score report breaks your result down the same way.

How hard is it to get PMP certified if I am selected for an audit?

An audit adds paperwork, not a test. PMI selects applications at random and gives you 90 days to submit the requested documentation; with complete documents, the audit should take about 5–7 business days. Source: PMI Certification Handbook, revised June 2026.

Is PMP test hard to finish in the time?

At 80 seconds per question, pace matters, especially on case and scenario questions. Practise under timed conditions before the exam.

How long does it take to get PMP exam results?

You see a preliminary result when you finish a computer-based exam. PMI says the official exam report is available in its online certification results system no later than 10 business days after your exam date. Source: PMI Certification Handbook, revised June 2026.

What is new in the PMP exam outline 2026 edition?

Business Environment rises to 26% of the exam, People and Process fall to 33% and 41%, and the tasks now include AI, sustainability and stakeholder engagement in project scenarios.

On pmi.org — the PMP certification page and PMI’s page on the new PMP exam both link to it. Checked 9 October 2026.

Is the PMP syllabus the same as the content outline?

Yes. PMI publishes no separate document; the official syllabus for PMP certification is the Examination Content Outline, with its three domains and 26 tasks.

Does advice on how to pass the PMP exam 2025 still apply?

Partly. PMI says the core principles and approaches remain the same, but the domain weights changed and case/scenario and graphic-based questions were added in July 2026.

Planning for the PMP: how to pass on your first try?

Study from the July 2026 content outline, practise timed scenario questions with explanations for every option, give agile and hybrid as much weight as predictive, and book only when you are strong in all three domains.

Which tips for PMP exam day matter most?

Know the break rule — once you start a break you cannot return to earlier questions — and plan your pace at 80 seconds per question. For the online exam, run PMI’s system test and prepare a private space and a valid photo ID.

Are there PMP test tips for the case-study section?

Read the scenario for the situation and the approach (predictive, agile or hybrid) before you read the options, and remember that the first break follows that section.

How long does a PMP certification last?

Three years. You renew by earning 60 PDUs per three-year cycle, at least 35 of them in Education and at most 25 in Giving Back. Source: PMI.

How long is PMP certification good for?

One three-year cycle at a time. PMI’s Certification Handbook says holders renew every three years.

How long does it take to complete PMP certification once I apply?

Once you have applied for the PMP certification, how long it takes depends on three steps: the review (PMI’s PMP Handbook gives 5 calendar days for online applications), a possible random audit (90 days to submit documents, then about 5–7 business days), and the exam, which you must pass within one year of approval.

How long to study for PMP exam if I work full time?

PMI sets no study time, so we will not quote one. Judge readiness by your results per exam domain rather than by a number of weeks.

How long does it take to study for PMP exam topics I do not use at work?

Longer than for the rest, which is why per-domain results matter. Business Environment — now 26% of the exam — is the area many candidates use least in daily work.

How long to prepare for PMP exam after the July 2026 update?

If you studied older material, add the new content: the larger Business Environment domain, AI and sustainability in project scenarios, and the new question types.

How long to prep for PMP exam once my application is approved?

You have one year from approval to pass, with up to three attempts. Book when your practice shows you are ready in every domain.

Is a PMP guarantee pass offer worth anything?

Only as far as its refund or repeat terms go. PMI publishes no passing score, so nobody can promise a PMP guaranteed pass on the exam itself.
