PMP certification: the complete guide
PMP stands for Project Management Professional, the certification issued by PMI. To earn it you document two to five years of experience leading projects, complete 35 hours of training, apply to PMI, and pass an exam of 180 questions in 240 minutes — the version PMI launched in July 2026. This guide walks through every step and every question in between.

PMP certification at a glance
PMP certification stands for Project Management Professional — the credential issued by PMI, the Project Management Institute. That is the full form of PMP certification, and it is the only PMP there is: universities, schools, training companies and coaches can prepare you for it, but none of them issue it.
To define PMP certification in one sentence: PMI says the PMP “validates skills and knowledge in managing & directing people, processes, and priorities”, and it admits only people who can document experience leading projects. PMI calls it a professional certification. PMP holders number 1.7 million, which PMI says makes it “the world’s most widely held project certification”.
- Issuer: PMI — no university or training company issues the PMP
- Entry bar: two to five years of experience leading projects, depending on your education, plus 35 hours of training
- Exam: 180 questions in 240 minutes, at a Pearson VUE test centre or online
- PMP latest version: the exam PMI launched in July 2026
- Attempts: up to three in one year
- Validity: three years, then renewal with 60 PDUs

A short PMP certification description: who it is for
The PMP is not an entry-level certificate. Among PMI’s credentials, the one for experienced leads is the PMP: project certification for people who already run projects. You cannot sit the exam to qualify for leading your first project. PMP certification comes after that experience, not before it.
The PMP management certification is about projects, not general management. The exam asks how you lead the team, run the process and connect the project to the business — PMI’s three domains of People, Process and Business Environment. The name says as much: the PMP professional certification is aimed at practitioners.
A certified PMP professional is expected to work across approaches. PMI states that the certification is not “tied to any specific methodology, industry or geography”, and it lets you “demonstrate your ability to lead projects in any industry”.

How to get PMP certified: the PMP certification procedure
There is one route, and PMI controls every step of it. In order:
- Check eligibility. You need one of: a high school diploma plus five years of experience leading projects; an associate degree or vocational diploma plus four years; a bachelor’s degree or higher plus three years; or a degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center programme plus two years. PMI counts experience from the last ten years.
- Complete 35 hours of project management training — or hold an active CAPM, which PMI accepts instead.
- Apply online with PMI, listing each project separately.
- Once your application is accepted, pay the exam fee and schedule the exam, at a Pearson VUE test centre or online.
- Pass within your one-year eligibility period. You may take the exam up to three times in that year.
- Maintain the certification: 60 PDUs in every three-year cycle.

PMP exam registration and sign-up
PMP exam registration happens in two stages, and the order surprises people. First you apply for eligibility; only after PMI accepts the application can you register for the PMP exam itself. There is no PMP exam sign up that skips the application, which makes PMP certification registration closer to an admission process than to booking a test.
PMI’s Certification Handbook adds that all applications are subject to an audit, and that a percentage of them are selected. PMP test registration then follows the instructions in the email PMI sends you about scheduling. You can reschedule or cancel a test-centre or online appointment up to 48 hours beforehand.
How to enroll for PMP certification training is a separate decision, and it comes first: the 35 training hours are part of the eligibility you document in the application.

Where do you take the PMP exam?
At a Pearson VUE testing centre or securely online; PMI calls the test centre the recommended option. Those are the only PMP test locations, and you book the Pearson VUE PMP exam only after PMI has accepted your application.
For the online option, PMI asks you to run a system test in advance, use a private space and have a valid photo ID ready.

Taking the PMP exam at home or at a test centre
Can you take the PMP exam at home? Yes, through PMI’s online proctored option, with one exception that PMI’s handbook names: online proctoring is not available to citizens of the People’s Republic of China, Macau and Hong Kong, regardless of where they live, and in mainland China only paper-based testing is offered.
Is the PMP exam proctored? Yes, in both modes — online by a remote proctor, and at a test centre by the centre’s administrator. A PMP exam test center provides your note-taking material: either a booklet of scratch paper and two pencils, or two erasable marker boards with markers and an eraser. Which one depends on the centre’s supplies; candidates do not get to choose.

How to take the PMP exam: the day itself
Bring acceptable photo ID; PMI’s handbook says that without it you may be denied admission. The PMI PMP certification exam then starts with a tutorial. If you do not close the tutorial yourself, it ends automatically once its 15-minute window has elapsed, and the exam begins.
Taking the PMP exam on a computer, you have a calculator built into the exam, and at a test centre you can raise your hand and ask for a handheld one. Notes of your own are not allowed: PMI lists “having access to or using notes or any prohibited aid related to the test” among prohibited behaviour.
Nobody can sit it for you, either. Requests like “take my PMP exam for me” describe proxy testing, which PMI names explicitly: “using or attempting to use someone else to take the test” is prohibited.

The PMP exam interface: what you see on screen
The PMP exam interface goes well beyond a list of four-option questions. The July 2026 outline names eight item types: case or scenario questions, enhanced matching, graphic-based questions, multiple-choice single response, multiple-response questions, point and click, matching, and pull-down lists. Some of them, such as point and click, only work on screen, so practising them beforehand saves time on the day.
PMI treats exam content as confidential — its handbook says exam materials “are not available for review by any person or agency for any reason”. A PMP exam screenshot showing real questions is therefore either a mock-up or a breach. PMI’s own sample questions, published on its PMP page, are the legitimate way to see the style in advance.

PMP exam structure and time breakdown
The PMP exam structure is set by PMI’s Examination Content Outline of July 2026. These are the PMP exam details that matter for planning:
- 180 questions, of which 170 are scored and 10 are unscored pretest questions
- 240 minutes in total — the PMP exam time limit — with two 10-minute breaks
- Domains: People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26%
- Approach: about 40% of items represent predictive project management; the rest are adaptive or hybrid
Source: PMI — PMP Examination Content Outline, July 2026. Checked 9 October 2026.
Reading the PMP exam breakdown
As a PMP exam time breakdown, 240 minutes for 180 questions is 80 seconds per question on average. Plan your pacing around the PMP exam breaks rather than the clock alone, so that each stretch between breaks gets a fair share of the time.
The domain split is the most useful PMP exam breakdown for study. Business Environment is now just over a quarter of the PMP exam content, up from 8% before July 2026, so any PMP test breakdown you plan around should be the current one.
Is the PMP exam multiple choice? Multiple choice is part of it, but that is not all it is. PMP exam multiple-choice items sit alongside the seven other item types in the outline.
Language: PMI’s Certification Handbook says all PMI exams are available in English and that some are translated into up to 15 languages. In Spanish the credential is the certificado PMP — the same PMI certification.
Source: PMI — PMP Examination Content Outline, July 2026. Checked 9 October 2026.
PMP exam scoring
PMP exam scoring is not a published percentage. PMI’s handbook says the passing score for all PMI exams “is determined by sound psychometric analysis”, and the 10 pretest questions do not count towards it. PMI publishes no pass rate.
When you finish a computer-based exam you receive a score report. In addition to the overall pass or fail, it gives diagnostic information on your performance in each domain — useful guidance whichever way the result goes.

The new PMP exam (July 2026): what changed
PMI launched the new PMP exam in July 2026, so the PMP exam 2026 candidates sit now is the updated one. The main shift is in weighting: People fell from 42% to 33%, Process from 50% to 41%, and Business Environment rose from 8% to 26%.
The timing changed too. PMI’s older PMP Handbook, still online and based on the January 2021 outline, describes 230 minutes and 5 pretest questions. The July 2026 outline sets 240 minutes and 10 pretest questions, with the total unchanged at 180.
If you started studying early, PMI’s advice is direct: “If you’re already studying older materials, keep going. Core principles and approaches of the PMP exam remain the same.” Still, the PMP exams 2025 candidates sat followed the earlier outline, so material written for the PMP exam 2025 edition gives Business Environment far less weight than today’s exam does.
A separate change follows on 1 December 2026: from then on, live classes count towards the 35 hours only if they come from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited higher education programme. PMI states that training completed before 1 December 2026 remains eligible under the current requirements.

PMP exam news and the current version
The current PMP exam version is the one PMI launched in July 2026, defined by the Examination Content Outline of the same date. That exam update and the training rule from 1 December 2026 are the two changes PMI’s PMP pages describe as of 9 October 2026 — the PMP exam news worth acting on.
Questions about the PMP latest edition usually mean the PMBOK Guide rather than the exam. PMI’s current edition is the PMBOK Guide — Eighth Edition, published in November 2025. The latest PMP edition of the exam outline, by contrast, is dated July 2026.
Source: PMI — The new PMP exam, launched July 2026. Checked 9 October 2026.
PMP exam reference list and which PMBOK for the 2026 exam
PMI’s July 2026 outline contains no PMP exam reference list. It mentions A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) without naming an edition, and it states that PMI “does not endorse specific review courses resources, references, or other materials for certification preparation”. We found no current reference list on pmi.org when we checked on 9 October 2026.
So which PMBOK for PMP exam 2026 preparation? PMI does not tie an edition to the exam. The outline, not any single book, defines what is tested. Treat any PMP exam reference list 2026 or older list circulating online as someone’s reading list, not PMI’s.
Source: PMI — PMP Examination Content Outline, July 2026. Checked 9 October 2026.
PMP exam formulas and cheat sheets
The July 2026 outline does not mention formulas, earned value or calculations, so PMI does not say how many calculation questions appear. What PMI does provide is a calculator built into the exam.
If you revise earned value, these are the definitions to know precisely: cost variance CV = EV − AC, schedule variance SV = EV − PV, cost performance index CPI = EV ÷ AC, and schedule performance index SPI = EV ÷ PV. Writing formulas for PMP exam revision onto one page is a fine way to learn them.
A PMP exam cheat sheet or PMP exam formulas cheat sheet is a study tool only. It stays outside the exam room, because PMI lists using notes or any prohibited aid as prohibited behaviour.

PMP examples: project descriptions and a risk register
We found no official sample application on PMI’s pages, and copying one would not help: PMI asks you to list your own projects, each separately. One PMP example structure that keeps a project description clear covers four points:
- what the project was for and what it delivered
- your role and who you led
- what you did across the project, in your own words
- the outcome
Using PMP project description examples safely
PMP project description examples you find online describe other people’s projects. Use them for structure only; the dates, the role and the work have to be yours, and overlapping projects should not double-count your time.
For revision, a PMP risk register example looks like this: one row records the risk (“key supplier delivers late”), its probability and impact, an owner, a response strategy — for example, mitigate by qualifying a second supplier — and a trigger that tells you the risk is starting to occur.
PMP certification time and timeline
The PMP certification timeline is set mainly by the experience requirement: two to five years of leading projects, depending on your education, counted from the last ten years. The 35 contact hours for PMP certification come on top, then the application, and once you are approved you have one year to pass.
Is there a fast PMP certification? Only in the sense that the steps after the experience can move quickly. There is no PMP certification fast track in PMI’s rules: a course advertised as fast track PMP certification compresses the 35 hours, not the experience. If you need to get your PMP certification fast, the fastest PMP certification route is to have your experience documented, your training complete and your projects ready to list before you open the application.
The quickest way to get PMP certified is also the best way to get PMP certified: pass on the first attempt. PMI’s handbook says fees are paid again for the second and third attempts.
PMP certification contact hours can come from self-paced online courses from any organisation; from 1 December 2026, live classes count only from the three categories PMI names. On PMP certification hours, PMI asks for 35. PMP certification without degree is possible too: a high school diploma plus five years of experience qualifies.

When is the next PMP exam, and how often is it offered?
How often is the PMP exam offered? PMI’s PMP page and handbook describe no fixed exam dates. After your application is accepted, PMI emails you scheduling instructions, and you choose an appointment at a test centre or online within your one-year eligibility period.
Source: PMI — Certification Handbook. Checked 9 October 2026.
How many times can you take the PMP exam?
Three times within your one-year eligibility period: the first attempt and, in the words of PMI’s handbook, “two additional times” if you do not pass. The handbook also states that “repayment of fees applies to the second and third attempts”.

PMP certification: Army, military and veterans
There is no separate military PMP certification or veteran PMP certification: service members and veterans earn the same PMP under the same rules. What differs is how you fund it and how you describe your experience.
PMI’s military page lists DoD COOL — covering the Army, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, Navy and Marines — and GI Bill reimbursement options among the programmes that can help cover the cost of training and certification. For Army PMP certification funding, DoD COOL is the programme PMI points to.
Experience is judged as for anyone else: PMI asks for experience leading projects, in any industry. PMI’s military page quotes a veteran who says her background and leadership experience counted towards the PMP requirements; whether yours does depends on whether you led projects you can describe and date.
Source: PMI — Military. Checked 9 October 2026.
VA PMP certification funding and the GI Bill
PMI’s veterans page says that many veterans “pay nothing out of pocket for certification and training”, and it names programmes including the Post-9/11 GI Bill and Veteran Readiness and Employment (Chapter 31). Eligibility and amounts are decided by those programmes, not by PMI, so confirm your entitlement with the VA before you pay for a course or the exam.

PMP certification for construction, healthcare and engineering
Because the PMP is not tied to any industry, there is no construction PMP certification, no PMP healthcare certification and no engineering PMP certification — the exam and the requirements are the same for everyone.
For construction, PMI does run a separate credential: the PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP), which PMI describes as offering “an in-depth curriculum focused on the construction industry” and which asks for 3+ years of experience. If you are weighing PMP certification for construction work against PMI-CP, the difference is breadth: the PMP is industry-neutral, PMI-CP is built for the sector.
Healthcare and engineering have no PMI counterpart in PMI’s certification list. PMP certification for healthcare project leads, and PMP certification for engineers moving into project roles, means the standard PMP certification. Healthcare and engineering experience count like any other, as long as you led the projects.

PMP certifications: types and levels at PMI
There are no PMP certification levels: the PMP is one credential with one exam. What people mean by levels is PMI’s wider portfolio, where the PMP sits in the middle:
- CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) — no experience required. If you are looking for a PMP associate certification, this is it; there is no associate PMP certification, but an active CAPM satisfies the PMP’s 35-hour training requirement.
- PMP — experience leading projects, two to five years depending on your education
- PMI-ACP (Agile Certified Practitioner) — 2+ years of experience
- PgMP for programmes (4–7 years) and PfMP for portfolios (8+ years)
- Specialist credentials such as PMI-RMP (risk), PMI-SP (scheduling), PMI-PBA (business analysis), PMI-CP (construction) and PMI-PMOCP (PMOs)
Source: PMI — Certifications overview. Checked 9 October 2026.
Agile, CSM and the question of an equivalent
Is the PMP certification agile or predictive? Both: about 40% of the current exam represents predictive approaches and the rest adaptive or hybrid ones. That is why there is no agile PMP certification as such — PMI’s agile-specific credential is the PMI-ACP.
PMP and CSM certification answer different questions. CSM (Certified ScrumMaster) comes from a different issuer and centres on the Scrum Master role; the PMP covers leading projects across approaches. Neither replaces the other.
Is there a PMP certification equivalent? No other credential is a PMP-equivalent certification, because the PMP is defined by PMI’s own experience requirement and exam.
Source: PMI — PMP Examination Content Outline, July 2026. Checked 9 October 2026.
Choosing a PMP certification institute or school
There is one PMP certification institute in the issuing sense: PMI. Deciding where to get a PMP certification course is the real choice, because the 35 hours must come from somewhere. From 1 December 2026, live classes count only from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited higher education programme. PMP certification schools — universities and colleges — count for live training only if their programme falls into that last category.
When a provider advertises an “accredited PMP certification” course, check which of those categories it belongs to. PMI grants the certification; the course only prepares you for it.
For a PMP certification, best institute criteria are practical: does the course count towards the 35 hours, does it teach against the July 2026 outline, and does it include timed practice with explanations? The best institute for PMP certification preparation is the one that meets all three for your schedule and budget. We do not rank providers.
The best place to get PMP certification is therefore always the same — PMI, after your application is accepted — while where you train is up to you. A PMP exam coach or PMP exam coaching can add structure on top; before paying, ask whether the coaching counts towards the 35 hours under PMI’s rules, or whether you already have them.

How valuable is a PMP certification?
PMI publishes two figures. PMP certified project professionals in the US earn a median salary of $135,000, and PMP holders report median salaries 17% higher than those without the certification. Both are medians reported by holders, not a promise for any individual, and PMI publishes no pass rate.
When a job advert says “PMP certification preferred”, the employer values the credential but does not require it. Does PMP certification help beyond that? PMI’s figures point to higher pay; whether that applies to you depends on whether your work is project delivery.
There is no separate US version of the PMP certification. USA candidates apply, pay and test exactly like everyone else; only the fee varies, by region and membership. Employers looking for PMP certified professionals can check a claim in PMI’s online registry.
As for how many PMP certified in world regions outside the US, PMI gives no breakdown — only the global total of 1.7 million holders.
Source: PMI — PMP certification. Checked 9 October 2026.
PMP certification check: registry, number and login
The PMP certification registry is PMI’s online Certification Registry. It lists active and retired PMI credential holders; you search by country or region, optionally narrowed by certification and by first and last name. Holders can opt out, and those who do will not appear in the search — so a missing name is a reason to ask, not proof of a false claim.
The registry search does not ask for a PMP certification number; it works by name and country. Once certified, PMI’s handbook says, you can download a digital version of your certificate.
PMP certification login runs through your PMI account. The handbook points holders to myPMI to opt out of the registry or update their details, so managing my PMP certification settings means signing in there.
Source: PMI — Online Certification Registry. Checked 9 October 2026.
Is there a PMP exam promo code?
Not from PMI, as far as its published documents go. PMI’s PMP page and Certification Handbook, checked on 9 October 2026, describe no public discount code; the handbook says only that prices “may vary based on a candidate’s membership status and regional location”. A code advertised as a PMP exam promo code 2026 deal comes from someone else.
Dated codes deserve extra suspicion: a “PMP exam promo code April 2026” offer is tied to a month that has passed. Whatever you are offered, the amount that counts is the one on PMI’s own payment screen after your application is accepted.

The PMP exam, simplified: advice that holds up
Stripped down, the exam asks you again and again to choose the best action for a project leader in a given situation, across People, Process and Business Environment. PMP exam advice that holds up against PMI’s own documents:
- Study the July 2026 outline first; it defines what is tested.
- Weight your time like the exam: Process 41%, People 33%, Business Environment 26%.
- Practise all eight item types, not only single-answer multiple choice.
- Train your pace at 80 seconds per question and use both breaks.
- Read each scenario for the approach it describes — predictive, adaptive or hybrid — before choosing an answer.

Final PMP exam review
These PMP exam hints are not shortcuts. Plan a final PMP exam review in the last weeks: a full-length PMP trial test under exam timing, then short, targeted PMP exam reviews of the domains where you dropped points. A PMP test review that only rereads notes tells you less than one that makes you answer questions.
Practising for the PMP with Certsqill
Certsqill’s PMP practice questions are expert-developed, each with an explanation for every answer option, and your results feed a readiness score per exam domain — so you can see whether People, Process or Business Environment still needs work before you book. Access comes with a 7-day money-back guarantee.

It already has been: PMI launched the new PMP exam in July 2026. Source: PMI, checked 9 October 2026.
Is the PMP exam changing in 2026?
It changed in July 2026. The domain weights moved to People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%, and the exam is now 240 minutes with 10 unscored pretest questions among the 180.
How is PMP exam changing for people who studied older material?
PMI says to keep going: “Core principles and approaches of the PMP exam remain the same.” Shift more of your time to Business Environment, which rose from 8% to 26%.
Is the new PMP exam 2026 harder?
PMI does not say, and it publishes no pass rate that would show it. What is measurable is the shift in weighting and the 10 extra minutes.
What is the current version of PMP exam content?
The Examination Content Outline dated July 2026. Source: PMI, checked 9 October 2026.
Is there a PMP exam reference list PMI publishes for 2026?
Not in the July 2026 outline, which states that PMI does not endorse specific references. We found no current list on pmi.org on 9 October 2026.
Is the PMP exam reference list 2025 version still valid?
PMI ties no reading list to the current exam. The July 2026 outline is the document that defines what is tested.
Are there different PMP certification types?
No. There is one PMP. PMI’s other certifications — CAPM, PMI-ACP, PgMP, PfMP and the specialist credentials — are separate certifications with their own requirements.
How valuable is PMP certification outside the US?
PMI’s PMP page gives the $135,000 median for the US only. It states no figure for other countries, checked 9 October 2026.
Is PMP certification valuable if my title is not project manager?
What PMI checks is experience leading projects, not a job title. If you lead projects you can document, the certification records that.
Is PMP certification in USA more valuable?
PMI’s published pay figure — a median of $135,000 — is for the US. The certification itself is the same everywhere.
How many PMP certified in the world?
1.7 million holders, according to PMI, checked 9 October 2026.

Is there a separate PMP certification log in?
PMI’s handbook refers certification holders to myPMI, the account area on pmi.org, for registry and profile settings.
Does a PMP exam promo code 2025 still work?
PMI documents no promo codes at all, so there is no official code to expire. Check the final amount on PMI’s payment screen.
Is there a PMI promo code for PMP exam fees?
PMI’s PMP page and handbook describe none. The difference PMI documents is pricing by membership status and region.
