PMP salary and career value: what PMI’s own data shows
PMI publishes its own salary data, which makes the PMP one of the few certifications where a salary question can be answered from the issuer. In its 14th Project Management Salary Survey, PMP holders in the US reported a median salary of $135,000, and across the 21 countries surveyed PMP holders reported a 17% higher median salary than non-certified peers. This page sets out those figures, what they leave out, and how to weigh them against the cost of getting there.

PMP certification salary: the figures PMI publishes
The source behind every official PMP salary figure is PMI’s Project Management Salary Survey. The current, 14th edition surveyed 14,628 project professionals across 21 countries between 9 March and 19 April 2025, and PMI released the results in late 2025. Its headline findings on PMP certified salary:
- United States: PMP holders reported a median salary of $135,000, against $109,157 for respondents without the certification — a difference PMI puts at nearly 24%.
- All 21 countries: respondents with the PMP reported a 17% higher median salary than non-certified peers.
- Experience as a PMP: in the US, holders certified for more than ten years reported a median of $173,000, against $123,000 for those certified less than five years.
- Industry: in the US, respondents in pharmaceuticals and aerospace reported a median of $150,000.

PMP average salary vs median, and the PMP salary range
Searches ask for the PMP average salary, but PMI reports medians: the middle value of what respondents said they earn. A median is less distorted by a few very high salaries than an average, so it is the better figure to plan with — just remember it describes the survey group, not a promise for any individual.
PMI does not publish a full PMP salary range in its public summary. Results by country, role and experience sit in an interactive Salary Survey Tool that PMI marks as exclusive for PMI members. The public figures cover the US in detail and the 21-country comparison as a percentage; for other countries, the tool is the official source.

PMP salary 2025 and PMP salary 2026
The latest survey data was collected in spring 2025 and published at the end of that year, so it is the PMP salary 2025 picture and the most recent official one available during 2026. PMI has not published a separate PMP salary 2026 edition; when you see a “2026” figure elsewhere, check which survey it comes from.

Entry level PMP salary: why there is no true entry level
An entry level PMP salary is hard to define, because the PMP is not an entry-level certification. PMI requires two to five years of project management experience within the last ten years, depending on your education, before you can apply. Everyone in the survey who holds a PMP therefore already had that experience.
The closest official figure is the one for newer holders: in the US, those certified less than five years reported a median of $123,000. If you are starting out, PMI’s CAPM is the certification without the experience requirement.

PMP certification salary increase: what the survey can and cannot tell you
The 17% and 24% figures compare two groups of people, not the same person before and after. So they do not prove that a PMP will raise your pay by that amount; people who earn the PMP also tend to have more experience and larger roles. Treat any promised PMP salary increase as a correlation reported by PMI, not a guaranteed effect.
What PMI does report on pay movement is that a majority of PMP certified respondents had an increase in total compensation over the previous year, with three-quarters of those raises being up to 10%. PMI’s press release and its survey page describe the size of that majority slightly differently, so we do not quote a single percentage for it.

PMP jobs salary: what differs by role and industry
A PMP job salary depends far more on the role, the industry, the country and your experience than on the certificate alone. PMI’s public summary names only two industries — pharmaceuticals and aerospace, at a $150,000 US median — and gives no figure for others. There is no official construction PMP salary in the public data, for example, and none for IT or government; those breakdowns, where they exist, sit in the members’ tool.
So when you compare PMP certification jobs salary figures from job sites, read them as estimates for a job title, not as data about certified professionals.

Jobs with PMP certification
What jobs can you get with a PMP certification? PMI positions the PMP as proof that you can lead projects in any way of working — predictive, agile or hybrid — so the roles are the ones where you lead project delivery: project manager, senior project manager, programme or portfolio roles, project management office roles, and delivery lead roles in many industries. PMI does not publish an official list of job titles, so treat this as orientation rather than a catalogue.
Jobs that require PMP certification are set by employers, not by PMI. Some job ads and contracts list the PMP as mandatory; many more list it as preferred. When you search for jobs requiring PMP certification, search for the job titles as well, since the credential is often in the requirements rather than in the title. Employers can check a candidate’s claim in PMI’s online Certification Registry.
PMP certification jobs remote: PMI publishes no data on remote work for PMP holders. The certification is the same wherever you work; whether a role is remote is decided by the employer.

Does PMP certification help get a job?
It helps where the employer asks for it, and it is evidence of experience rather than a substitute for it. Because PMI checks your project experience before you may sit the exam, the PMP tells an employer that you have both led projects and passed a demanding exam. PMI cites employers worldwide regarding the PMP as a top project certification, and with 1.7 million holders it calls the PMP the world’s most widely held project certification.
What it cannot do is replace the experience an employer wants for a specific role. Jobs for PMP certified professionals still expect a track record in the industry and the methods they use.

Benefits of PMP certification beyond salary
The benefits of PMP certification that PMI documents are the salary data above, the global recognition of a single credential, and coverage of predictive, agile and hybrid delivery in one exam. PMP certification advantages also include a common vocabulary with other certified project professionals and an independent check of your experience.
The value of PMP certification also has a running cost: renewal every three years with 60 professional development units. That keeps the credential current, but it is time you commit for as long as you hold it.

Is PMP worth it?
Is the PMP worth it for you? No page can answer that with a single figure, but you can weigh it honestly. On one side: PMI’s reported medians — $135,000 in the US and a 17% gap across 21 countries — and a credential employers recognise by name. On the other: two to five years of required experience, 35 hours of training, an exam fee PMI varies by membership and region, renewal every three years, and the study time itself.
Is getting a PMP worth it if you already lead projects? It is most likely to pay off when your target roles list it, when you are moving between employers or countries, or when your experience is hard to prove otherwise. It is least likely to matter in organisations that do not ask for it.
Is PMP worth it in 2026, after PMI updated the exam in July 2026? The update changed the content outline and weights, not the value of the credential; the salary figures above are the latest PMI has published. Is PMP certification worth it in 2026 for someone without the experience? Not yet — you cannot sit it; the CAPM is the first step.

CAPM vs PMP salary, MBA and PMP, Six Sigma
CAPM vs PMP salary: PMI’s public survey summary gives medians for PMP holders and non-certified respondents, but no separate CAPM figure. The two are a sequence rather than alternatives — the CAPM has no experience requirement, and an active CAPM covers the 35 training hours you need for the PMP.
PMP MBA salary: PMI publishes no figure for people who hold both — no official MBA PMP salary — and no comparison of an MBA and PMP salary. An MBA is a degree that teaches; the PMP attests to project delivery already done. People who hold both usually do so because their roles combine business and delivery responsibility, which is also why no clean comparison exists.
PMP vs Six Sigma salary: Six Sigma is not a PMI certification, and PMI publishes no comparison. Six Sigma is a quality and process-improvement discipline; the PMP certifies project leadership. The question is which work you want to do, not which credential pays more.

How to get PMP certification
If the numbers convince you, this is how to get PMP certified, in the order PMI sets it:
- Meet the experience requirement: five years of managing projects with a high school diploma, four with an associate degree, three with a bachelor’s degree or higher, or two with a degree from a PMI GAC programme — gained within the last ten years.
- Complete 35 hours of project professional training, through an on-demand course, a live class or an active CAPM. From 1 December 2026, live classes count only from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited higher education programme.
- Apply with PMI. Once your application is accepted, pay the exam fee and schedule the exam at a Pearson VUE test center or online.
- Pass the exam: 180 questions in 240 minutes, with two 10-minute breaks. You may take it up to three times in one year.

PMI Authorized On-Demand PMP Exam Prep
Searches for the PMI authorized on demand PMP exam prep course point to PMI’s own self-paced course, now listed in the PMI store as the Project Management Professional (PMP) Exam Prep Course. PMI states that it is designed to prepare you for the PMP and to satisfy the 35 training hours required to apply, lists 35 PDUs and a 35-hour duration, and says it is aligned to the PMP Exam Content Outline. It is offered in several languages, including Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese.
Because it is self-paced, it is not affected by the 1 December 2026 rule for live classes. The store page showed no price when we checked; PMI shows it at checkout.

PMP salary & career value: questions people ask
What is the average PMP salary?
PMI reports medians rather than averages. In its 14th salary survey, PMP holders in the US reported a median of $135,000, against $109,157 for non-certified respondents. Source: PMI, checked 9 October 2026.
How much more do PMP holders earn?
Across the 21 countries in PMI’s 14th salary survey, PMP holders reported a 17% higher median salary than non-certified peers; in the US the gap was nearly 24%. These compare groups, not the same person before and after.
Does the PMP salary rise with experience?
In PMI’s US data, holders certified more than ten years reported a median of $173,000, against $123,000 for those certified less than five years. Source: PMI press release, 13 November 2025.
Is there an official PMP salary by country?
Only for the US in PMI’s public summary. Results by country, role and experience are in PMI’s Salary Survey Tool, which PMI marks as exclusive for members.
Is PMP certification worth it?
It depends on whether your target roles ask for it. PMI’s data shows higher median salaries for holders; against that stand two to five years of required experience, 35 training hours, the exam fee and renewal every three years.
Are PMP certification worth it for career changers?
Only once you have the project experience PMI requires — two to five years, depending on education. Without it you cannot apply; PMI’s CAPM has no experience requirement.
Is it worth getting a PMP certification if my employer does not ask for it?
It can still help when you change employers or need independent proof of your experience. If you plan to stay where the PMP is not used, the benefit is harder to see — weigh it against the cost and the renewal commitment.
Is getting a PMP certification worth it late in a career?
PMI sets no career-stage rule. Its data shows that long-standing holders report higher medians — $173,000 in the US for those certified more than ten years — but that reflects years of experience as much as the certificate. Weigh it against what your next roles ask for.
PMP worth it or not after the July 2026 exam update?
The update changed the exam content and weights, not the credential. The salary data PMI publishes was collected in 2025 and is the latest available.
What jobs can I get with a PMP certification?
Roles that lead project delivery: project manager, senior project manager, programme, portfolio and PMO roles, across industries. PMI publishes no official job list; employers decide which jobs require the PMP.
Is there an official PMP salary increase after certification?
No. PMI publishes salary differences between certified and non-certified respondents, not a guaranteed increase. It does report that most certified respondents had a pay increase in the past year, three-quarters of them up to 10%.
What is the entry level PMP salary?
There is no true entry level, because the PMP requires two to five years of experience. The closest official figure is the US median of $123,000 for holders certified less than five years.
Does the PMI Authorized On-Demand PMP Exam Prep count for the 35 hours?
PMI states that its PMP Exam Prep Course is designed to satisfy the 35 training hours required to apply, and lists 35 PDUs. Source: PMI store, checked 9 October 2026.
