PMP certification training: courses, bootcamps and the 35-hour rule

What PMP training is for

Project management professional PMP training does two different jobs, and it helps to keep them apart. The first is administrative: PMI will not accept your application without 35 hours of project management education. The second is practical: getting you through a PMP certification exam of 180 questions in 240 minutes, with two 10-minute breaks.

A good course for PMP certification does both. A course that only ticks the first box leaves you with a certificate of hours and no real readiness; study that only covers the second does not let you apply. A PMP class and certification are also separate things: the course gives you the hours, and the PMP certification PMI issues comes only after you pass its exam.

You may sit the exam up to three times in one year, but every attempt depends on the same preparation, so the training choice matters more than its price tag suggests.

The PMP 35 hour course: what PMI counts

PMI asks for “35 hours of Project Professional training” and accepts it through one of three routes: an online, on-demand course; a live, instructor-led class; or an active CAPM certification, which on its own fulfils the training requirement.

The PMP Handbook adds what does not count: PMI chapter meetings (unless at least one hour is spent on a learning activity) and self-directed learning — its examples are “reading books, watching instructional videos that do not include an end-of-course assessment”. A 35 hour PMP course online therefore needs to be a real course with an assessment at the end, not a playlist.

Training does not have to be about the PMP exam by name. The handbook lists topics such as scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk, procurement, resources, stakeholder and integration management, so a general project management course — PMP-specific or not — can count if it addresses project management learning objectives.

Online PMP courses vs live classes after 1 December 2026

For on-demand learning, PMI’s page is open: “Self-paced courses from any organization” count, alongside PMI’s own self-paced PMP Exam Prep Course. So a self-paced PMP online course from any provider can still deliver your 35 hours, as long as it meets the handbook’s conditions above.

Live classes are different. “Starting 1 December 2026, live classes (taught by an instructor in-person or online) are eligible only if delivered by” a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP), a China Registered Education Provider, or an eligible accredited higher education programme, including PMI GAC programmes. That covers every instructor-led PMP course, whether in a room or on video.

PMI also states that “any training completed before 1 December 2026 will still be eligible under our current requirements.” If you already finished your PMP project management training, you do not need to redo it.

PMP classroom training and instructor-led classes

PMP classroom training and a live online class are treated the same by PMI from 1 December 2026: both are live, instructor-led classes and both count only from an ATP, a China REP or an eligible accredited programme. PMI advises you to “search the directory before enrolling to confirm your training provider qualifies.”

Providers that advertise PMP classes and certification as one package can sell you the class. The certification itself only comes from PMI, after an approved application and a passed exam — no class includes it.

PMI-authorized PMP exam prep courses

When people search for PMI approved PMP courses, what PMI actually operates is the Authorized Training Partner programme. PMI states that “only PMI Authorized Training Partners use PMI official course content”, that learners receive “a PMI-developed learning kit”, and that classes are taught by PMI-certified instructors, online or in person.

A PMI authorized PMP exam prep course is therefore a course delivered by an ATP — check the provider in PMI’s Training Partner Directory rather than relying on the word “authorized” in an advert. Next to the ATP route, PMI sells its own on-demand course: the PMI PMP exam prep course listed on the PMP page as an online, self-paced option that fulfils the application’s training requirement.

So “PMI PMP training” can mean either of two official routes: PMI’s own self-paced course or a live class from an ATP. Both count; a non-ATP live class taken after 1 December 2026 does not.

PMP bootcamp: what to check before you book

A PMP bootcamp is a short, intensive live class aimed at covering the 35 hours and the exam content in one block. PMI has no separate category for bootcamps: a PMP boot camp is a live, instructor-led class, so from 1 December 2026 it counts only if an ATP, a China REP or an eligible accredited programme delivers it. The same applies to a PMP online bootcamp held over video.

Three questions to ask before you book a PMP certification boot camp:

• Does it deliver the full 35 hours, with a record of completion you can show PMI?
• Is the provider listed in PMI’s Training Partner Directory, if the class is held on or after 1 December 2026?
• Is the material written for the exam PMI updated in July 2026, with its new domain weighting?

Is a PMP crash course enough?

A PMP crash course of a day or two is useful as a final review, but it cannot cover the 35-hour requirement on its own. Check what it is: a PMP exam prep bootcamp that runs the full hours is training; a short recap is revision on top of training you already have.

PMP certification programs and certificate courses

Training is sold under many names — PMP certification programs, PMP certificate programs, PMP training programs, PMP education courses or a PMP professional course. PMI cares about none of these labels. It asks whether the training delivered 35 hours of project management education from a qualifying source.

A PMP certification training program at a university or college can also count: “university/college academic and continuing education programs” are among the provider types the PMP Handbook lists, and accredited higher education programmes stay eligible for live classes after 1 December 2026. Online PMP certification programs follow the online rules above, and so does any PMP exam preparation program sold as a package of course plus practice tests.

One distinction worth knowing: a PMP certificate course ends with a course certificate, which proves your training hours. It is not the PMP. The project management professional PMP certification program — application, exam, renewal — is run by PMI alone.

PMP exam prep courses: how to judge one

A PMP certification exam prep course should be measured against the current exam. PMI updated the PMP exam in July 2026 and shifted the domain weighting: People went from 42% to 33%, Process from 50% to 41%, and Business Environment from 8% to 26%. A project management professional PMP exam prep course written before that change gives Business Environment far less time than it now carries.

PMI says the new exam “reflects adaptive, real-world project dynamics”, so agile PMP training is not an extra — agile and hybrid ways of working are part of what a current PMP certification preparation course has to cover.

When you compare a project management professional PMP certification prep course with another, look at the date of the material, whether it follows the 2026 domains, and whether it includes full-length timed practice. A PMP certification exam preparation course that only explains theory leaves the 240-minute format untested, and a PMP exam training course without full-length mocks does the same.

Online PMP exam preparation

Online PMP exam preparation comes in two parts that are easy to mix up. One is training: an online PMP prep course or a PMP exam prep online course that delivers the 35 hours. The other is PMP test prep online — practice questions and mock exams — which helps you pass but does not count towards the hours unless it is part of a qualifying course with an end-of-course assessment.

A self-paced PMP prep course online counts from any organisation. A PMP prep class online that is taught live counts from 1 December 2026 only if an ATP, a China REP or an accredited programme runs it. Check which of the two you are buying before you pay for a PMP preparation course online. An online PMP preparation course that is self-paced also needs an end-of-course assessment to count; a PMP test prep course online without one is practice only.

How to choose the best PMP certification course

PMI publishes no ranking of providers, so any list of the best PMP certification courses or top PMP certification programs is someone else’s opinion. What PMI does publish is the set of rules a course must meet, and those make better selection criteria than a star rating:

• Eligibility: 35 hours, an end-of-course assessment for self-paced courses, and an ATP, China REP or accredited programme for live classes from 1 December 2026.
• Currency: material built for the PMP exam as updated in July 2026.
• Format fit: self-paced if you need flexibility, live if you need a fixed schedule and an instructor to ask.
• Practice: full-length, timed questions in the formats the current exam uses.
• Proof: a record of completion you can produce if PMI audits your application.

Choosing a PMP training provider or institute

A PMP training provider can be a company, an employer’s internal programme, a university or a PMI chapter — the PMP Handbook lists all of these provider types. For live classes from 1 December 2026, the shortlist narrows to ATPs, China REPs and eligible accredited programmes.

The same check applies to a PMP training institute, a PMP certification training institute or a PMP training center: look it up in PMI’s Training Partner Directory before you enrol, and ask whether its course is self-paced or live, because the rules differ. Among PMP training providers and PMP training institutes, “PMI-registered” or “PMI-recognised” in an advert is not a substitute for that lookup. Before you sign up for a PMP training program, ask for the number of hours in writing and how completion is documented.

PMP course, USA or elsewhere: the rule is the same

PMI applies one training rule worldwide. The ATP requirement for live classes names China Registered Education Providers explicitly but otherwise makes no exception by country, so a provider’s location does not change what counts. What does vary by region is the exam fee, which PMI ties to membership and regional pricing.

Is there free PMP training or a free PMP certification?

A free PMP certification does not exist: PMI issues the PMP only after an approved application and a paid exam, and its PMP page and handbooks describe no fee waiver. What can be free is part of the preparation.

PMI itself offers a free, one-hour introductory course “to explore PMP certification before you commit”. It is a starting point, not the 35 hours. When you see free PMP certification courses advertised elsewhere, the same test applies, and an advert promising a PMP free certification can only be offering a course certificate: the PMP itself is never free. For free PMP training to count towards the 35 hours, it has to meet the same conditions as paid training: a self-paced course with an end-of-course assessment, or — from 1 December 2026 — a live class from a qualifying provider. PMI’s requirement is about hours and source, not about whether you paid.

Free videos and other PMP free course material are useful for revision, but on their own they fall under what the handbook calls self-directed learning, which does not qualify. Free PMP courses are a different matter only if they deliver the full hours and end with an assessment.

PMP certification study material, books and videos

PMP certification study material helps you pass, but the handbook is explicit that “reading books, watching instructional videos that do not include an end-of-course assessment” does not count towards the 35 hours. PMP certification books and PMP course videos are therefore revision tools, not training hours.

Whatever you read, check that it was written for the July 2026 exam. Older material will cover the previous domain weighting, with far less on Business Environment.

Can you take the PMP exam online?

Yes. PMI states that you can take the exam “in person at a Pearson Vue Testing Center (recommended) or securely online”. If you choose online, PMI asks you to run a system test, choose a private space and have a valid photo ID ready.

The exam is the same in both modes: 180 questions in 240 minutes, with two 10-minute breaks. Taking the PMP exam online changes where you sit, not what you are asked.

PMP continuing education courses after you pass

Training does not end with the exam. To keep the PMP you earn 60 PDUs in each three-year cycle, at least 35 of them in Education. PMP continuing education courses are one way to earn those Education PDUs; PMI counts other learning activities too.
