PMP study guide: how to prepare for the PMP exam
Good PMP exam preparation starts with PMI’s own documents, not with a book cover. This PMP study guide is built from what PMI publishes: the July 2026 Exam Content Outline, PMI’s exam-prep page and its official prep products — so you know what to study, in what proportion, and which resources PMI itself offers.

PMP certification: how to prepare, step by step
Think of this as a PMP how-to-prepare checklist. Knowing how to prepare for PMP certification starts with seeing that the exam is only one stage of it, and that PMI sets the order:
- Check eligibility: three years of project experience with a bachelor’s degree or higher, four with an associate degree, five with a high school diploma, or two with a degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center programme.
- Complete 35 hours of project management training — an online course, a live class, or an active CAPM. From 1 December 2026, live classes count only if delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited programme.
- Apply to PMI. After approval you have one year to pass, with up to three attempts.
- Study against the current Exam Content Outline and practise under exam conditions.
- Book the exam and sit it: 180 questions in 240 minutes.

PMP exam prep 2026: what the exam covers since July
PMI launched an updated exam in July 2026, so any PMP study guide 2025 edition was written for the previous outline, and any PMP exam study guide you use now should start from the new one. The new weighting is People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%; before July 2026 Business Environment was only 8%. About 40% of items represent predictive project management, and the rest are adaptive (agile) or hybrid.
The exam has 180 questions in 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks. Ten questions are unscored pretest items, so 170 count. Item types include case or scenario, enhanced matching, graphic-based, multiple-choice, multiple-response, point and click, matching and pull-down list.
If you already started with older material, PMI’s own guidance is reassuring: “If you’re already studying older materials, keep going. Core principles and approaches of the PMP exam remain the same.” PMI adds that the update brings AI, sustainability and stakeholder engagement into project scenarios, so a PMP study guide 2026 edition should cover those and the new weighting.

Official PMI PMP exam prep: what PMI itself offers
PMI’s exam-prep page names its own resources, and they are the natural starting point for any list of PMP exam prep resources. PMI-authorized PMP exam prep comes in two forms there: PMI’s self-paced online course, which PMI says lets you “earn 35 training hours” and fulfils the application’s training requirement, and classes from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, which use “PMI-developed training that satisfies the PMP application’s 35-hour training requirement”.
For reading, PMI lists the PMBOK Guide and the Agile Practice Guide — both free for PMI members — and the PMP Exam Content Outline, of which PMI says: “The best way to know what is covered on the PMP exam is to understand the exam content outline.” That outline is the closest thing to a PMI PMP study guide: it lists every task the exam tests.
One caution from the outline itself: “The PMP certification exam is not written according to any single text or singularly supported by any specific reference.” No single book, PMI’s own included, is the whole syllabus.

PMI Study Hall for the PMP: Essentials, Plus and login
PMI Study Hall is PMI’s own study tool. PMI’s Study Hall FAQ describes it as “a digital desktop and mobile study companion designed by PMI to supplement exam preparation”, and names two plans, Study Hall Essentials and Study Hall Plus — sold as PMI Study Hall PMP Essentials and PMI Study Hall PMP Plus. You can enrol in one or the other, not both. Plus includes everything in Essentials and adds extra full-length practice exams, mini-exams and practice questions.
The current product page for the PMP Study Hall Plus subscription lists a learning plan with lessons and videos, case studies, flashcards, performance insights, three practice exams of 180 questions each and 20 mini practice exams of 10 questions each, and states that it is aligned to the PMP Exam Content Outline. Access runs for three months and then renews quarterly. In short, the PMI PMP Study Hall is the most complete set of practice material from the issuer itself.
- PMP Study Hall Essentials: the smaller plan, with fewer practice exams and mini-exams than Plus.
- PMP Study Hall login: PMI’s FAQ says to log into MyPMI on PMI.org and open the Products and Subscriptions tab, where your subscription appears.
- PMP Study Hall promo code: neither the FAQ nor the product page mentions any promo code or discount scheme, checked 9 October 2026, so treat codes advertised elsewhere with care and check the final price on PMI’s own checkout.

PMP exam prep videos, apps and practice exams
If you prefer to learn by watching, the official route to PMP exam prep videos is Study Hall, whose lessons include videos. PMI has also described Study Hall as a mobile study companion, which makes it the official answer to the search for a PMP prep app, a PMP study app or a PMP exam prep app. Any other app is a third-party product; judge it by the criteria further down this page.
PMI also sells a full-length practice exam: “one complete exam with 180 questions” in “three timed sections”, aligned to the PMP Exam Content Outline, with unlimited retakes. It is useful once, late in your PMP exam preparation, to test your pace over four hours.

PMP exam study plan: building your own
PMI publishes no recommended number of study hours and no official PMP study plan, so be wary of any page that gives you one as fact. What PMI does publish is the structure your plan should follow: three domains, their weights, and the tasks inside each one.
A PMP exam study plan that respects the outline spends roughly a third of its time on People, about two fifths on Process and about a quarter on Business Environment — because that is how the 170 scored questions are weighted. Inside each domain, work task by task through the Exam Content Outline and tick each one off only when you can answer scenario questions about it.
- People (33%): develop a common vision, manage conflicts, lead the project team, engage stakeholders, align and manage stakeholder expectations, help ensure knowledge transfer, plan and manage communication.
- Process (41%): integrated planning, scope, value-based delivery, resources, procurement, finance, quality, schedule, project status and closure.
- Business Environment (26%): governance, compliance, managing and controlling changes, removing impediments and managing issues, risk, continuous improvement, organisational change and external business environment changes.

How to study for the PMP exam
Studying for the PMP exam works best when your method matches how the exam asks. The best way to study for the PMP exam is therefore active. The questions are scenarios — you pick the best next action for a project manager — so reading alone is not enough. A workable PMP certification study plan alternates three activities:
- Learn: one domain task at a time, using the PMBOK Guide, the Agile Practice Guide and your training course.
- Practise: short sets of scenario questions on that task, reading the explanation for every option, including the ones you got right.
- Review: track which domain you miss most and return to it. Near the end, sit full-length timed practice exams to check you can hold your pace for 180 questions.
Is the PMP exam open book?
No. PMI’s Certification Handbook lists “having access to or using notes or any prohibited aid related to the test” among the grounds for dismissal from the exam. At a test centre you work with what PMI provides — either one set of scratch paper or two erasable marker boards at your terminal.
That shapes how you study for the PMP exam: you need to recall the concepts, not look them up. Knowing how to prepare for PMP exam questions under that condition means practising without notes from an early stage.

PMP exam prep books and study guides
The PMI publications are the obvious first PMP exam book: the PMBOK Guide and the Agile Practice Guide, both free for members. PMI’s exam-prep page also lists the exam references most cited in question development, including books by other publishers — but PMI states that it “does not endorse non-PMI publications or warrant the accuracy of their content.”
That is why this page does not rank a best PMP certification book. When you compare any PMP exam preparation book, or choose between several PMP exam preparation books, use checks that do not depend on anyone’s ranking:
- Does it say it covers the July 2026 Exam Content Outline, with People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%?
- Does it cover adaptive and hybrid approaches properly? They make up roughly 60% of items.
- Does it include scenario questions with explanations, not just definitions?
- Does it cover the topics PMI added in 2026, such as AI, sustainability and stakeholder engagement?

What makes the best PMP exam prep?
The best PMP exam prep is the combination that covers three needs: the 35 training hours PMI requires, the content of the current outline, and enough realistic practice to find your weak domains. A PMP study guide, a course and a question bank each cover one or two of those; few cover all three.
The same checks apply whether you are comparing the best PMP study guides, the best PMP study materials or the best book for PMP preparation: current outline, scenario-style questions, explanations for every answer, and honest timing. Paying more does not change those criteria.

Free PMP study material
There is genuinely free PMP study material from PMI: the Exam Content Outline and the Certification Handbook are free downloads on PMI’s exam-prep page, and PMI’s PMP page shows sample questions with the correct answers marked. For PMI members, the PMBOK Guide and the Agile Practice Guide are free as well.
Beyond that, a free PMP study guide or free PMP exam prep from other sources can help with a single topic, but check the date: material made before July 2026 reflects the old weighting. Free PMP exam preparation does not count towards the 35 training hours unless it is a qualifying course.

PMP study guide PDF and free downloads
Searches for a PMP study guide PDF free download, or a PMP study material PDF free download, lead to files whose origin and date are often unclear. The official PDFs worth downloading are PMI’s own: the July 2026 Exam Content Outline and the Certification Handbook.
PMI’s exam-prep page, checked 9 October 2026, lists no PMP exam quick reference guide PDF. If you see a PMP exam prep PDF or a PMP study guide PDF from elsewhere, check three things before relying on it: who published it, whether it names the July 2026 outline, and whether it reproduces copyrighted books or claims to contain live exam questions. PMI treats exam content as confidential.

PMP study groups
PMI’s exam-prep page names study groups as one of the benefits of preparing with a PMI Authorized Training Partner: “Learn with a group of like-minded peers to help you reach your goals.” A PMP study group works best when everyone uses the same outline and the group spends its time on scenario questions — arguing about why an option is wrong teaches more than reading summaries aloud.

Practice questions with explanations
Certsqill is the practice layer on top of your PMP prep. The PMP practice questions here are expert-developed, every question has an explanation for each answer option, and your results feed a readiness score per exam domain — so your PMP exam study plan can follow your weakest domain instead of a guess. Access comes with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
Certsqill is not a PMI Authorized Training Partner and its questions do not count towards the 35 training hours. Treat them as one of your PMP exam study resources, alongside the course and the official outline.
PMP study guide: questions people ask
How do I prepare for the PMP certification exam?
Meet the eligibility rules, complete 35 hours of qualifying training, apply, then study the July 2026 Exam Content Outline domain by domain and practise scenario questions until your weak areas are covered. That order is how to prepare for the PMP certification exam the way PMI sets it up.
What is the best way to prepare for PMP exam questions?
Practise scenario questions and read the explanation for every option. The exam asks for the best next action in a situation, so recognising definitions is not enough.
What is the best way to prep for PMP exam day itself?
Sit at least one full-length timed practice exam first: 180 questions in 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks. The pace is part of what you are practising.
How long does it take to prepare for PMP certification?
PMI publishes no study-time figure. What it does fix is the 35 hours of training you need before applying, and the one-year window to pass once your application is approved.
Is the PMP exam open book?
No. PMI’s Certification Handbook lists access to or use of notes or any prohibited aid related to the test as grounds for dismissal, checked 9 October 2026.
Is PMP exam open book at a test centre if I only bring my own notes?
No. Notes are a prohibited aid. At the testing terminal you use the scratch paper or marker boards provided.
What are the PMP exam guidelines for content?
The PMP Exam Content Outline is PMI’s official PMP exam guide to content: three domains (People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26%) and the tasks within each. Rules for the day itself are in PMI’s Certification Handbook.
Is there an official PMP exam preparation guide from PMI?
The Exam Content Outline is the official PMP exam preparation guide to what is tested. PMI also sells Study Hall and a practice exam, and lists the PMBOK Guide and Agile Practice Guide as reading.
Which PMP exam prep guide should I buy?
Any PMP exam prep guide you buy should name the July 2026 outline and its weighting. PMI does not endorse non-PMI publications, and this page does not rank them.
What PMP exam prep materials does PMI offer?
Study Hall (Essentials and Plus plans), a full-length practice exam, a self-paced 35-hour course, the PMBOK Guide and the Agile Practice Guide, and the free Exam Content Outline. Source: PMI, checked 9 October 2026.
Which PMP exam preparation materials are the most reliable?
Those written against the July 2026 outline. PMI’s own materials say so explicitly; for anything else, check the edition.
What PMP exam study material do I actually need?
A qualifying course for the 35 hours, the Exam Content Outline, at least one current reference such as the PMBOK Guide, and scenario practice questions with explanations.
Is the PMI PMP study material enough on its own?
It covers the content, but the outline states the exam is not written to any single text. Add plenty of scenario practice whatever you read.
Is a PMP prep book enough to pass?
A book covers content; it does not give you the 35 training hours, and few books give enough timed scenario practice. Most candidates combine a book with a course and practice questions.
Which are the best PMP prep books?
We do not rank them, and PMI does not endorse non-PMI publications. Check edition date, coverage of the July 2026 outline and the quality of the practice questions.
What is the best book for PMP prep if I am short of time?
The PMBOK Guide and Agile Practice Guide are PMI’s own and free for members. Beyond those, choose a current book with scenario questions and explanations rather than a longer one.
Is a PMP test book from before July 2026 still useful?
For core principles, yes — PMI says they remain the same. But its domain weighting is out of date, and Business Environment, now 26%, will be under-covered.
Are PMP exam books from 2025 still worth reading?
They cover the previous outline. PMI tells candidates already studying older materials to keep going, but you should add the 2026 topics and weighting yourself.
What should I look for in a book for PMP exam preparation?
Current outline, adaptive and hybrid coverage, and scenario questions with reasoned explanations. Those matter more than page count.
Do the best PMP certification books count towards the 35 hours?
No. Books do not count. Only qualifying training does: an online course, a live class from an eligible provider, or an active CAPM.
Where can I find a free PMP study guide?
The PMP study guide free from PMI is the Exam Content Outline, a free download. PMI members also get the PMBOK Guide and Agile Practice Guide free.
Is there PMP study material free of charge from PMI?
Yes: the Exam Content Outline, the Certification Handbook and the sample questions on PMI’s PMP page. Members also get the two PMI guides free.
Is free PMP preparation material good enough?
For individual topics it can be. Check that it is written for the July 2026 outline, and remember that free material does not replace the 35 qualifying training hours.
Is there free PMP certification material that counts as training?
PMI’s own course is paid. Free PMP certification material from other sources counts only if it is a course that meets PMI’s training rules.
Is free PMP exam prep worth it?
As a start, yes. PMP exam prep free of charge from PMI means the Exam Content Outline and the sample questions on its PMP page — the best place to begin before you decide on paid material.
What is the PMI PMP Study Hall?
PMI’s own study tool, sold as a three-month subscription. The Plus plan lists lessons, flashcards, practice exams of 180 questions and mini-exams of 10 questions. Source: PMI, checked 9 October 2026.
Is PMP Study Hall Plus worth it compared with Essentials?
Plus includes everything in Essentials and adds more practice exams, mini-exams and questions. If you already have another source of practice questions, Study Hall Essentials PMP access may be enough; if Study Hall is your main practice source, Plus gives you more full-length exams.
How long does PMI Study Hall PMP access last?
Three months, then the subscription renews quarterly, according to PMI’s product page, checked 9 October 2026.
Is there a PMP Study Hall promo code?
PMI’s Study Hall FAQ and product page mention none, checked 9 October 2026. Prices are shown on PMI’s own checkout.
What is the best PMP study guide?
There is no official ranking. The best study guide for PMP preparation is current to July 2026, follows the outline’s three domains and comes with scenario questions and explanations.
Is a PMP certification study guide the same as the PMP Exam Content Outline?
No. The outline is PMI’s list of what is tested; a PMP certification study guide teaches it. Use the outline to check that the guide is complete.
Where can I find a PMP project management professional study guide that matches the current exam?
Start from PMI’s July 2026 Exam Content Outline and check any PMP project management professional exam study guide against it, domain by domain.
What is a PMP exam prep study guide for?
To turn the outline into lessons. A good PMP exam prep study guide follows the three domains, covers predictive, adaptive and hybrid approaches, and gives practice questions.
Can I study for PMP certification while working full time?
Most candidates do — PMI requires years of project experience, so applicants are usually working. Studying for PMP certification part time works best with a fixed weekly schedule and short daily question sets.
Do I need a course to prep for PMP?
Yes, in the sense that 35 hours of training are an entry requirement. To prep for PMP beyond that, a course, the outline and practice questions together cover the ground.
What does project management professional PMP certification preparation involve?
Eligibility, 35 training hours, the application, studying the July 2026 outline and timed practice. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exam prep is the last two of those.
What is the best way to study for PMP exam topics in Business Environment?
Work through its eight tasks in the outline — governance, compliance, change control, issues, risk, continuous improvement, organisational change and external changes — with scenario questions. The domain rose from 8% to 26% in July 2026, so older material often covers it too thinly.
Do PMP prep materials from my training course cover everything?
Check them against the July 2026 outline. PMP prep material written before the update may miss topics PMI added, such as AI and sustainability in project scenarios.
Is there one best PMP study material?
No. There is no single best PMP study material — PMI’s outline itself says the exam is not written to any single text. A current reference, a qualifying course and scenario practice together work better than any one product.
Is a PMP study material free download PDF from a forum safe to use?
You cannot tell who wrote it, which outline it follows, or whether it contains copied books or live exam content, which PMI treats as confidential. PMI’s own free PDFs are the safer download.
Does Certsqill offer a PMP preparation test?
Yes — expert-developed PMP practice questions with an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per domain, backed by a 7-day money-back guarantee.
Is this PMP cert prep accepted for the 35 training hours?
No. Certsqill is practice for the exam, not qualifying training. The 35 hours must come from an eligible course, a live class from an eligible provider, or an active CAPM.
