PMP vs CAPM, PMI-ACP, PRINCE2, Scrum Master and Six Sigma
The PMP is PMI’s certification for experienced project managers. PMI describes it as demonstrating your ability to lead projects “without being tied to any specific methodology, industry or geography” — which is exactly what separates it from most of the credentials it gets compared with.

PMI vs PMP certification: the institute and the credential
This one is a naming question rather than a choice. PMI is the Project Management Institute, the organisation. PMP — Project Management Professional — is one of the certifications PMI issues, alongside CAPM, PMI-ACP and others.
So when a job ad asks for “PMP or PMI certification”, it usually means the PMP specifically or another PMI credential; when someone asks whether to get a PMI or PMP certification, the real question is which PMI certification fits their experience. The rest of this page answers that.

Is PMP a license or certification?
It is a certification. PMI calls it “the Project Management Professional® certification” and issues it itself; it is not a government licence to practise. You keep it by earning 60 professional development units (PDUs) in each three-year renewal cycle, which PMI states on the PMP page.

PMP vs CAPM certification
The difference is experience. The PMP requires three to five years of experience managing projects within the last ten years, depending on your education (two years with a degree from a PMI GAC-accredited programme), plus 35 hours of project management training. The CAPM requires a secondary degree, an age of at least 18 and 23 hours of project management education — no project experience at all.
The exams differ too. PMI lists the PMP at 180 questions in 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks, and the CAPM at 150 questions in 180 minutes. The PMP domains are People, Process and Business Environment; the CAPM tests fundamentals, predictive and agile methods and business analysis frameworks.

CAPM or PMP certification: which to take first?
If you do not yet meet the PMP experience requirement, the choice is made for you: CAPM now, PMP later. And the two connect — PMI states that “an active CAPM certification also fulfills PMP training requirements”, so the CAPM covers the 35-hour training step when you move up.
If you already have the years of experience, the PMP and CAPM certification paths do not need to be combined. Going straight to the PMP saves an exam fee and a renewal cycle. Comparing PMP certification vs CAPM in terms of renewal: CAPM holders need 15 PDUs per three-year cycle, PMP holders 60.

PMI Agile Certified Practitioner vs PMP
Both come from PMI, but they certify different things. The PMI-ACP is specific to agile: 120 questions in 180 minutes across Mindset, Leadership, Product and Delivery, with 21 hours of agile training required. The PMP is the broader credential: PMI describes it as not tied to any specific methodology.
They also link up: PMI lists holding the PMP as one of the ways to meet the PMI-ACP experience requirement. A common sequence is therefore PMP first, then PMI-ACP if your work is mainly agile. If you only ever work in agile teams and do not need the PMP’s breadth, the PMI-ACP can stand on its own — it requires two years of agile experience in the past five years, or one year combined with a qualifying degree or another agile certification.

PMP certification vs PRINCE2
PMP vs PRINCE2 certification is a comparison between a competency credential and a method. The PMP tests whether an experienced project manager can lead projects across methods and industries; it has an experience requirement. PRINCE2 is a specific project management method, examined by PeopleCert, and its Foundation level has no prerequisites listed on PeopleCert’s page.
The exam load is very different. PRINCE2 7 Foundation is 60 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, closed book, with a 60% pass mark and renewal every three years with 60 CPD points. The PMP is 180 questions in 240 minutes.

PMP or PRINCE2 certification: which one should you choose?
Look at the job ads for the roles you want, in the market where you want them. Some employers ask for one by name, some accept either. The two are not mutually exclusive: PRINCE2 Foundation is a short exam you can take early, while the PMP waits until you have the required years of project experience.
Certified Scrum Master vs PMP
A scrum master certification and the PMP certify different roles. A scrum master serves one scrum team; a project manager is accountable for a project’s scope, schedule, budget and stakeholders. The CSM from Scrum Alliance is an introductory credential: a 16-hour course with a Certified Scrum Trainer, then a test of 50 multiple-choice questions in one hour, passed with 37 correct answers. Renewal is every two years.
Scrum.org’s PSM I takes a different route: no required course, $200 USD per attempt, 80 questions in 60 minutes with an 85% passing score, and lifetime validity. Either way, the PMP vs scrum master certification gap is one of scope and depth: the PMP requires years of project experience before you can even apply.

PMP certification vs scrum master: when each makes sense
Take a scrum master certification if you are joining or leading a scrum team and need the framework fast — it is days of effort, not months. Take the PMP when you manage projects end to end, across methods, and have the experience PMI requires. The two are not exclusive: a scrum master certification can come early, the PMP once you have the years of experience.
Comparing a scrum master certification vs PMP on cost: the CSM course price is set by the trainer, with Scrum Alliance stating a range of $250–$2,495 USD including two test attempts, while PMI publishes no single PMP fee because it depends on membership and region.

PMP certification vs Six Sigma
These answer different questions. The PMP is about leading projects — scope, schedule, people and stakeholders. Six Sigma is a process-improvement approach focused on reducing variation and defects in existing processes, with belt levels offered by a range of organisations rather than one central issuer like PMI.
So the Six Sigma certification vs PMP choice follows your job. If you run projects, the PMP fits. If you improve operational processes, especially in manufacturing or service operations, a Six Sigma belt fits. In process-improvement roles that are run as projects, the two complement each other.
What does “PMP or equivalent certification” mean in a job ad?
It means the employer will consider a credential it judges comparable to the PMP. There is no official list of equivalents; the employer decides. If you hold a different project management certification, name it clearly in your application and, if possible, ask the recruiter whether it qualifies.
If you meet PMI’s experience requirement and plan to stay in project management, the PMP removes the question entirely.
