What is PMP certification?
PMP stands for Project Management Professional, a certification issued by PMI, the Project Management Institute. PMI describes it as acknowledging candidates who are skilled at managing the people, processes and business priorities of professional projects. This page explains what the credential means, what the exam is like, how holders are verified, and how to show it on a resume.

What does PMP certification mean?
What does PMP certification stand for? Project Management Professional. The PMP certification meaning goes beyond the letters, though: PMI requires documented project experience before you may sit the exam, so the credential says that you have led projects and passed a demanding exam on how to lead them.
A short PMP certification definition: a professional certification from PMI for experienced project managers, earned by meeting education and experience requirements, completing 35 hours of training and passing the PMP exam, and kept by earning 60 professional development units every three years. That is what is meant by PMP certification when an employer asks for it — and what PMP certified means on someone’s profile.
PMI states that 1.7 million holders make PMP the world’s most widely held project certification.

PMP certification: what is it, and who is it for?
It is a cross-industry credential. The exam covers predictive, agile and hybrid approaches, so it applies whether you run construction projects, marketing programmes or software delivery. For project managers working in IT, PMP certification is often listed alongside technical certifications because it describes how the project is run, not the technology.
It is not an entry-level qualification. With a bachelor’s degree PMI requires three years of experience managing projects; with an associate degree four years; with a high school diploma five years; and with a degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center programme two years.

What is the PMP exam like?
What is a PMP exam in practical terms? 180 questions in 240 minutes, with two 10-minute breaks. Ten of the 180 are unscored pretest questions, so 170 count. You take it in person at a Pearson VUE test center, which PMI recommends, or online.
What does the PMP exam look like on screen? Not only classic multiple choice. PMI’s 2026 content outline lists case or scenario questions, multiple-choice single response, multiple-response questions, matching and enhanced matching, graphic-based questions, point and click, and pull-down lists. About 40% of items represent predictive project management; the rest are adaptive or hybrid.
The content is split into three domains: People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%. PMI publishes no passing score and no pass rate.

What PMBOK is the PMP exam based on?
None, strictly speaking. PMI’s Examination Content Outline states that “the PMP certification exam is not written according to any single text or singularly supported by any specific reference.” The outline — the 2026 version for the exam launched in July 2026 — is what defines what is tested.
The PMBOK Guide remains a useful reference, and PMI describes it as the global standard for project management, but studying one edition of it is not the same as studying the exam scope. Use the content outline as your map and the PMBOK Guide as one of several sources.

What does it take to get a PMP certification?
Four things, in order: the education-and-experience combination above, 35 hours of project management training, an approved application to PMI, and a passed exam. From 1 December 2026, live classes count towards the 35 hours only if delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited higher education programme; an active CAPM also satisfies the training requirement.
Once certified, you keep the credential by earning 60 PDUs in each three-year cycle, at least 35 of them in Education.

What is PMP certification good for?
What can you do with a PMP certification? It does not unlock a specific job, but it is a recognised signal for project management roles. PMI reports that PMP-certified project professionals in the U.S. earn a median salary of $135,000, and that holders report median salaries 17% higher than those without the certification. Those are PMI’s figures; no one else is cited here.
So what does a PMP certification get you? A credential that recruiters search for by name, a common vocabulary with other certified project managers, and — for many — a stronger case in salary conversations. What it cannot do is replace the experience it certifies.

Why get a PMP certification — and should you?
Why get PMP certified? The usual reasons are visibility in hiring, the earnings difference PMI reports, and a structured way to keep learning through the PDU cycle. The usual reasons against are the entry bar and the effort: years of documented experience, 35 hours of training, a four-hour exam and ongoing renewal.
Should I get a PMP certification? A useful test: if project leadership is your career and you meet the experience requirement, the PMP is the credential the field recognises most widely. If you are earlier in your career, PMI’s CAPM is designed without the experience requirement. As for “what is the best PMP certification”: there is only one PMP, issued by PMI.

PMP credentials and other PMI certifications
PMI issues several credentials. PMP is the one for experienced project managers; CAPM sits below it for those starting out, and PgMP sits above it for programme managers. A Google or university course called “PMP” is training under its own brand, not the PMI credential — only PMI issues the PMP.

PMP certification lookup: how to verify a PMP
How to verify PMP certification: use PMI’s Online Certification Registry. PMI states that the registry maintains an up-to-date record of individuals with active or retired PMI certifications, and its Certification Handbook says it exists to allow verification for the benefit of employers, service purchasers and others.
For a PMP certification search, enter the person’s country or region (required), and optionally the certification and their first or last name. One caveat for any PMP certificate verification: holders can opt out of the registry, so a missing name is not proof that someone is not certified. In that case, ask the holder to share their digital badge or certificate.

What is a PMP certificate?
Asking “what is PMP certificate” usually means the document PMI issues when you earn the credential. PMI’s Certification Handbook says you can download a digital version: log in, open “My Certification” and click “View Certificate”.
What does a PMP certificate look like? We do not reproduce one here, and appearance is a poor way to check one anyway. If you want to see one in order to verify someone, use the registry instead; if you are the holder, download your own from your PMI account.

PMP certification badge and logo
Your PMP certification badge comes from Credly: PMI’s handbook says you will receive an email from Credly on behalf of PMI with a link to accept it, using a Credly account with the same email address you used for the exam. The badge is the shareable, verifiable image for profiles and email.
The PMP certification logo is different. PMI’s handbook lists PMP and the related names and logos as marks of the Project Management Institute, and it sets out no general permission to use the logo. If you want a PMP certified logo on a profile or signature, use your Credly badge rather than copying the mark.

PMP certification on resume and email signature
PMI’s handbook authorises holders to use the certification designation in block letters after their name on business cards, and states that it may not be used in company names, domain names or product names. That rule shapes how to list PMP certification on resume pages, profiles and signatures: “PMP” in capitals, after your name.
How to add PMP certification to resume sections: put “PMP” after your name in the header, and list the credential in full under certifications. Here is a PMP resume example, with the header, the PMP certification resume line and a matching signature:
- Header: Jane Doe, PMP
- Certifications: Project Management Professional (PMP), Project Management Institute — earned [month, year]
- PMP email signature example: Jane Doe, PMP | Senior Project Manager

What to bring to the PMP exam
At a test center, the essential item is identification. PMI’s handbook requires a valid, current (non-expired), government-issued ID, and your name must match exactly as it appears on your scheduling notification — a mismatch can mean being turned away.
Bring little else: the handbook states that the only items you may keep on your person are your ID and your locker key, and it lists mobile phones, watches and smart bands among the restricted items. You do not bring your own paper; the test center provides either scratch paper or marker boards. For the online exam, PMI’s PMP page says to have a valid photo ID ready.

What can I do with PMP certification outside IT?
The same: the PMP is cross-industry, and the exam covers predictive, agile and hybrid approaches rather than any one sector.
Should I get PMP certification without the experience?
You cannot: PMI requires two to five years of project experience depending on your education. PMI’s CAPM is the option without that requirement.
