PMP requirements: eligibility, experience and how to apply

PMI only lets you sit the PMP exam once you meet its eligibility rules: a combination of education and project management experience from the last ten years, plus 35 hours of project management training. This page sets out each requirement as PMI states it, what counts as experience, and the steps from application to exam.

PMP requirements at a glance

Who can take the PMP exam is decided by two PMI PMP requirements, and you need both. First, education plus experience — choose the line that matches your highest education:

  • High school diploma, GED or secondary certificate: 5 years of experience managing projects
  • Associate degree or vocational trade school diploma: 4 years of experience managing projects
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher: 3 years of experience managing projects
  • Bachelor’s or postgraduate degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center (GAC) programme: 2 years of experience managing projects

PMP hours requirements: the 35 hours of training

Second, 35 hours of project professional training. PMI accepts three routes: an online, on-demand course — PMI’s own PMP Exam Prep Course or a self-paced course from any organisation; a live, instructor-led class; or an active CAPM certification, which on its own fulfils the training requirement.

The PMP hour requirements change for live classes on 1 December 2026. From that date, live training counts only if it is delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited higher education programme, including PMI GAC programmes. Self-paced courses can still come from any provider, and training completed before 1 December 2026 remains eligible.

PMP degree requirements: do you need a degree?

No. The PMP education requirements set how much experience you need, not whether you may apply. A degree shortens the path — three years of experience with a bachelor’s degree instead of five — but the PMP certification requirements without degree are simply the high school line: five years of experience managing projects plus the 35 training hours.

PMI describes the current rules as recognising “a wider range of educational equivalencies”, including associate-level and advanced technical or vocational programmes. If your qualification is not a classic degree, check which line it falls under before you count your years.

PMP certification requirements: experience that counts

The PMP experience requirements are about leading and directing project work. PMI defines a project as “temporary work undertaken in a unique context to create value”, and its certification page describes experience as “taking responsibility for planning, decisions, delivery and outcomes”. The experience does not have to be paid, but it has to take place in a professional setting, and it must fall within the last ten years.

PMI’s own PMP experience examples include leading a system implementation, managing a product launch and leading workstreams within a larger programme. Job titles matter less than the work: PMI says roles such as project coordinator, program analyst or team lead may qualify if you can show you were leading and directing project work — and that a project manager title does not automatically make all of your work count.

What does not count: school projects, personal events, home improvement projects and academic research for a degree-granting programme. Routine operational or administrative work, such as answering customer requests every week, belongs outside the application too.

How PMI counts the years

Experience is measured in months, not in number of projects. You list each project separately, but where two projects overlap, the overlapping months count only once. PMI’s own example: a project from 1 January to 31 March and a second from 1 February to 31 May give five months in total, not seven.

Before you start the application, write down every project with its name, dates and your role, and check the list for overlaps. That tells you quickly whether you meet the experience required for PMP certification at your education level.

PMP application experience examples

For each project, PMI asks you to be ready to explain what the project aimed to accomplish, when it started and ended, how you led or directed the work, who you worked with or influenced, which project activities you led, and what value, output or outcome it delivered.

PMI’s own example shows the difference between a weak and a strong description. Weak: “I supported a software rollout.” Stronger: “I led the implementation planning for a software rollout across three business units,” followed by what you coordinated — stakeholder requirements, schedule milestones, user communications, risk tracking and transition planning.

Examples of PMP application experience that you find elsewhere — including a PMP application experience examples PDF — are useful for structure only. Your descriptions must describe your own projects, and PMI’s advice is direct: “Be specific, but do not inflate your role.”

Writing a project description for the PMP application

A good example of project description for PMP application purposes follows the six questions above and stays factual. Describe the scope and success criteria, the schedule, resources, risks and changes, stakeholders, status communication, governance, deliverables and closure — whichever of those you actually led — and end with the outcome.

Keep the focus on your role and contribution rather than the team’s. The same description may need to stand up to PMI’s audit, which asks for documentation of what you claimed.

Can I take the PMP exam without experience?

No. Project management experience is part of PMP certification eligibility at every education level — the minimum is two years, with a degree from a PMI GAC programme. Can I get PMP certification without experience by doing more training instead? Not under PMI’s rules: training and experience are separate requirements, and one does not replace the other.

If you do not yet have the experience, PMI’s CAPM certification is the entry-level option without the experience requirement. An active CAPM also counts as the 35 hours of training when you later apply for the PMP.

PMP certification steps: from application to exam

How to become PMP certified, in the order PMI handles it:

  • Check eligibility: your education line, your experience months from the last ten years and your 35 training hours.
  • Submit the PMP exam application online with each project listed separately.
  • Wait for review: PMI’s PMP Handbook gives a processing time of 5 calendar days for online applications.
  • Answer an audit if you are selected: PMI picks applications at random and gives you 90 days to submit the requested documents; the audit itself should take about 5–7 business days.
  • Pay and schedule: “Once your application is accepted, you’ll pay your exam fee and schedule your exam.”
  • Pass within your eligibility period: you have one year and may take the exam up to three times.
  • Maintain: earn 60 PDUs every three years to keep the credential.

How to apply: PMP certification application step by step

Your application for PMP certification goes to PMI, not to a training provider or the test centre. Knowing how to apply for the PMP exam saves time: the form covers your education, your training hours and your experience project by project; PMI’s PMP Handbook adds that all project experience must be recorded individually, however many projects you include.

Before applying for PMP certification, gather your project list with dates and roles and the proof of your 35 training hours. Applying and booking are two separate steps: you can only register for the exam date once PMI has accepted your application — then you pay the fee and choose either a Pearson VUE test centre or the online exam.

PMP requirements 2026: what changed

Compared with the PMP requirements 2025 candidates met, PMI changed two things in 2026. With the July exam update, PMI says the requirements now “recognize a wider range of educational equivalencies”, including associate-level and advanced technical or vocational programmes, and its page on the new exam describes a 10-year window for experience. PMI’s older PMP Handbook still says experience must have been accrued within the last eight consecutive years; the certification page today says the last ten years, and that is the rule to plan by.

The second of the new PMP requirements concerns training. From 1 December 2026, live classes count towards the 35 hours only from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited higher education programme. So if you are comparing the PMP certification requirements 2025 with the PMP certification requirements 2026, check both your qualification line and your training provider. Training completed before 1 December 2026 remains eligible.

How to get PMP certification fast

There is no fast lane past the experience requirement — the years are fixed by your education level. What you can speed up is the rest of the steps to get PMP certification: complete the 35 hours while you are still building experience, keep a running record of your projects with dates and roles so the application takes days rather than weeks, and keep the documents that would support an audit.

After approval, the exam fits in your one-year eligibility period. Booking before you are ready is not faster if it ends in a retake.

How to get PMP certification for free

PMI documents no free route to the credential. Its PMP page says that once your application is accepted, you pay your exam fee — and PMI’s handbooks state that the fee depends on membership status and region. Training costs depend on the route you choose for the 35 hours; PMI does offer a free introductory PMP course among its study resources, but its pages do not say that it counts towards the 35 hours.

PMP continuing education requirements

The requirements to get PMP certified are only half the story. To keep the credential, PMP holders earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) in each three-year cycle — at least 35 in Education and at most 25 in Giving Back — and renew every three years.

Not about eligibility: requirements documentation and the requirements management plan

Some searches for PMP requirements documentation or a PMP requirements management plan are about project content, not about the application. Requirements documentation records what stakeholders need from a project’s deliverables, and a requirements management plan describes how those requirements will be gathered, analysed, documented and controlled through the project.

In the July 2026 exam content outline, this work sits mainly in the Process domain under developing and managing project scope. If you are studying the requirements management plan, PMP scenario questions will test it in context rather than as a definition — and keep it apart from the PMP project requirements you meet as a candidate.

Preparing once you are eligible

Once your application is in, the exam is what remains. Certsqill’s expert-developed PMP practice questions explain every answer option, and your readiness score is shown per exam domain, so you know when you are ready to book. Every plan has a 7-day money-back guarantee.

PMI names leading a system implementation, managing a product launch and leading workstreams within a larger programme. What matters is that you led and directed the work in a professional setting.

Are there PMP work experience examples that do not count?

Yes: school projects, personal events, home improvement projects, academic research for a degree, and routine operational or administrative work.

Where can I find PMP application project description examples?

PMI’s blog post on what counts as project management experience (28 August 2026) gives a weak and a strong example and the six points each description should cover.

What are the PMP application requirements per project?

For each project, be ready to explain its aim, start and end dates, how you led the work, who you worked with, which activities you led and what it delivered. Each project is listed separately.

How do I get my PMP certification?

Meet the education, experience and training requirements, apply online with PMI, complete an audit if selected, pay the exam fee, schedule and pass the exam within one year, then maintain it with 60 PDUs every three years.

How to become a certified PMP: what is the first step?

How do I register for PMP exam dates?

Only after PMI accepts your application. Then you pay the fee and schedule at a Pearson VUE test centre or online.

What happens in a PMP application audit?

PMI selects applications at random. If yours is chosen, you have 90 days to submit the requested documentation, and the audit should take about 5–7 business days once it is complete. Source: PMI Certification Handbook, revised June 2026.
